Frustration

I haven't been able to play many games in the last 10 days or so, my internet connection has been brutal.

The last month or so my connection has been extremely laggy, to say the least. I'll click an action and it'll take 5-50 seconds to go through. I managed to get in about 8k vpps worth of games in the first 12 days of the month, but since then it's just been too bad to play.

Comcast (my ISP) has been out here 4-5x now, they sent their head tech the other day. He climbed up on the pole and saw that squirrels had chewed through the line, so he replaced that. He also replaced our TV box (that had been laggy as well) and all signs pointed towards the problems being fixed. That was Thursday.

I played a game Thursday and the connection wasn't the best, but I only lagged briefly 3-4x and hadn't disconnected at all from any messanger programs nor had I experienced slow browser page loads.

Yesterday, I tried playing a few games and the bad lag was back. I made it through about 5 games between the regular speed regulars and I fighting for games, but that was about it.

Today I was hoping the connection would've improved somewhat, but it's worse as ever. I'm being disconnected from trillian (basically AIM) a few times an hour on average, web pages are loading very slowly and most importantly the Pokerstars connection is being lost every couple of minutes.

I previously had a Sprint Broadband card that broke a few months ago, I forgot about it but got a free month of service and a free replacement card from Sprint, so I went to load it up yesterday on my girlfriend's laptop and it wasn't connecting. Today, I tried to install and load it on my PC and for some reason it won't install the drivers nor will it update automatically. So that is my second internet option and it is also not working. I'm going to have to bring it into the Sprint store on Monday.

My other option of internet I ordered Monday, DSL from ATT. It arrived Wednesday, though they told me it wouldn't arrive until the following Monday. It cannot be activated until Monday, however, so that is another option down the drain.

Another option is a friend of mine that lives nearby. He has DSL, but he is out of town at the moment.

Needless to say, I am beyond frustrated at this point. I've been mirred in a downswing for the last few hundred games, and it's really upsetting me that I can't get some games in to work my way out of it. It also sucks to not really be making any money (besides a little staking and coaching income, I'm not really bringing money in at the moment, husng.com isn't up yet and my business is done until the spring). Luckily I have some money in the bank and on a few poker sites, so I'm not starving or anything, but gaps in play/profit always hurt even if the impact isn't immediately felt.

One other thing that has bothered me lately was that I received a ticket last week on my work truck, which I park on the street in front of our house. I have kind of a makeshift bumper (it's a work truck obviously) so I put my front license plate in the window of my truck. I got a 50 dollar parking ticket for no displayed license plate last week! I've lived here since August 1st and had the truck parked here a majority of the time since then, and not a warning, citation or ticket up until now. I didn't even realize it was illegal, I've been pulled over twice (just random, no tickets or anything) in the few years I've owned this truck and not once has the officer said a damn thing about this. Needless to say, I don't see much I can do about the ticket except pay it. I'm thinking about filing a complaint to the town's police department, but what does that accomplish besides pissing off a bunch of cops? Next thing I know I'll be fined for having a piece of litter on my lawn or something even more silly. If I were wealthier I would probably hire a lawyer for a few hundred dollars just to piss off the police and get out of the ticket, but I can't afford to be a jerk and it's almost certainly the better life choice to not do that, but in all honesty I can see myself doing that.

So, besides all of that bull, life has been ok. Our first 3 beers seem to have come out great (the last two beers aren't finished but I am highly confident that they will turn out good at the very least) and there's a noticable forward progression in them from the prior beers we made. We were both a little worried that we might take a step back from the 3+ month layoff of brewing, but it seems we've continued to progress. I've also been reading more about some smaller breweries run by former homebrewers like myself, in which they use very small batch sizes when brewing beer (very similar to the sizes we use). This is a very good sign to me, because if we end up able to make award winning beer (homebrew competition) I would be very confident that I could start and operate a profitable brewpub. I'm getting a little ahead of myself in that regard, but it's in the back of my mind as we continue to brew. Up next on the brewing list is a holiday beer, an oatmeal cookie beer. We're using a Southern English Brown ale base and adding some oats and spices to create what hopes to be an oatmeal cookie type taste and aroma in the beer. I've read up on this one a little bit, but it doesn't seem to have been done too extensively. I'll be eagerly awaiting this one. We are also going to brew a big barleywine with our other two buddies that brew, a collaberation brew if you will. We will be doing our first 10 gallon batch on the new system for this one, and splitting up the batch 5 gallons each, fermenting and serving the beer at our respective places. We may even use 2 different kinds of yeasts and hops for dryhopping, to give each beer a unique taste.

I guess that is all for now, I feel a little better after unloading my depressing start to the month, but I just need to be a little more confident and less lazy and I'm sure things will start to pickup around here.

Online Poker In Jeapordy

The Bush Administration appears to be attempting to pass new regulations for the UIGEA legislation as one of the "midnight" acts that most presidents do shortly before leaving office. This is troublesome, to say the least.

I've made a sticky on the 2p2 HU forum alerting users about the legislation and I urge all readers of my blog to at the very least call the #s in the following thread and/or email relevant parties.

Here is the link: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/57/poker-legislation/lets-all-call-fed-tell-them-hold-off-uigea-regs-340261/

Also, if you have a blog, please post about this and link to that post. We need all the support we can get.

Results

Election Prediction Results:

1) Obama wins by a pretty good margin

Obama won by 7% or so and won over 2-1 in the electoral college. This was a very safe bet though, as a lot of betting sites had Obama at 1:12 or even better prior to the election.

2) Obama wins Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, PA, New Hampshire and the rest of the NE states (WV is the only state north of VA and east of IN that McCain wins).

I was right on all of these predictions, but I left out NC (likely Obama) and Indiana (Obama won narrowly).

3) I think McCain will squeek out North Carolina.

I was wrong here, looks like Obama squeeked it out, 50-49, or by less than 14k votes out of more than 4.2 million votes in the state.

4) I want to say McCain will win Florida by a hair as well, but I'm going to predict Obama wins Florida by less than 2 points.

Obama won Florida by 2 pts. I thought the anti gay marriage initiative would give McCain more support than it did, or maybe the Gore/Clinton campaigning combined with the advertising advantage Obama had just really counteracted that and then some.

I recall Hillary Clinton making the claim that Obama had no chance in Florida if he would be the nominee vs McCain and most pundits agreed. Turns out about 99% of the arguments the Clinton campaign made in the primaries were bullshit. Obama crushed PA, OH, won FL by 2 and was very competitive in western states Hillary could not dream of competing in.

5) Obama loses Indiana by less than 3 pts, comes within 5 pts of taking Arizona, McCain's home state.

Obama actually wins Indiana by 26k votes, or less than 1% I believe. Mccain wins Arizona by 9 points. Very surpising to me that Obama takes Indiana and gets trounced in AZ, he was pushing ads in AZ up to the election day and the demographics of the state have improved mightily for Democrats in recent years. Yes, I realize Indiana is Obama's neighboring state, and the organization was crazy huge in the Gary/Northwest Indiana areas, and that McCain is from AZ, but the former I still didn't think would be enough for Obama and the latter I thought the ads and polls were a sure sign Obama was competitive (not to mention NV and NM went Obama pretty solidly).

6) Election is called after Obama wins Virginia and Pennslyvannia (I'm not sure on this one, some polls may close before others, like if Obama won Virginia, Florida and OH and PA wasn't announced yet, most people would likely call it for Obama).

I think it was after Virginia, though the networks could've called it after Ohio/PA were called earlier. I think I was right on this one, but I'm not positive.

Conclusion: I think I did a good job of predicting the results. I didn't nail them on the head and I don't give myself a ton of credit bc I think this was a very very predictive election according to the polls (I've been following the polls on many sites, especially fivethirtyeight.com, though also realclearpolitics and pollster.com).

I'm not going to get into my personal views on the election or anything, I'm sure a lot of people are tired of hearing how everyone feels about this, but I am happy Obama won. I definitely preferred him over Hillary and most other democratic challengers, and while I liked McCain more than any other GOP candidate and some democratic ones, campaigning has never been his forte, and neither has leading or working with large groups of people. He seems to be good at micromanaging one or two reform things at a time and getting shit done that way, I also respect him for his ability to stand up to the traditional right wing of his party throughout his career in the Senate.

Meh, I guess I did share some of my views.

Election and Pics

First off, since election day is tomorrow, I'd like to make a few predictions:

1) Obama wins by a pretty good margin

2) Obama wins Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, PA, New Hampshire and the rest of the NE states (WV is the only state north of VA and east of IN that McCain wins).

3) I think McCain will squeek out North Carolina.

4) I want to say McCain will win Florida by a hair as well, but I'm going to predict Obama wins Florida by less than 2 points.

5) Obama loses Indiana by less than 3 pts, comes within 5 pts of taking Arizona, McCain's home state.

6) Election is called after Obama wins Virginia and Pennslyvannia (I'm not sure on this one, some polls may close before others, like if Obama won Virginia, Florida and OH and PA wasn't announced yet, most people would likely call it for Obama).

7) Chicago will be nuts, I'm staying in.

-----

Now, to non election stuff.

Our brewing setup is functional. We've brewed 2 beers, one on each of the last 2 Wednesdays. The first was a hoppy red ale, or hoppy amber ale. This recipe was based on one I found from a very respected brewer known as Jamil. We used a similar grain bill (basically you can seperate a beer recipe into malt or grain, hops and yeast) to what he used, but changed the hop profile and yeast. It is going to be kegged Wednesday, and should be ready to taste in about a week. Initial partially fermented-non carbonated tastes have been very promising.

The other beer we did was a pumpkin beer. I know, Halloween was Friday and it won't be ready for a few weeks, but I've always wanted to brew one of these and so did my friend, so we did it.

I have some pics of this beer and the brewery below, but we basically took a light amber ale recipe, tuned it up into a stronger alcohol/sweeter beer and added 5 lbs of organic pumpkins doused in dark brown sugar and some spices (cinnomin, ginger root and nutmeg). It was really fun to brew and I think it will taste delicious.

Most importantly, we've hit all of our targets during the brewing process, meaning our brewing setup is very efficient. This was one of our major concerns when building it, that we would not be very efficient and would spend a lot of time and effort trying to calculate and offset recipes so that we could duplicate them or get the taste we want in our beers. Fortunately, it seems we will have very little adjusting to do.

We have also encountered no major problems with the setup. While we have figured out a few improvements that we would like to make, there is nothing pressing that is required.

Here are some pictures of the pumpkin beer and brewery.

Above is a picture of the pumpkins being prepared. The night before we had to slice, skin and gut the pumpkins, douse them in dark brown sugar and put them in the oven for about two hours until they softened. We then refrigerated them overnight.

Above is a pic of our setup. It's not a great picture, I realize I'm going to have to take more now, but on the top we just to the left of the fan you can see a pot sticking out (better viewed in the next picture). That is the water pot, where water is heated up to a certain temperature. It is then dropped into the converted keg-pot below the fan, called the mash ton. The water is added to the grain there. Some time later (for all your brew savvy people out there, I know I'm leaving a lot out) the result of this, the wort, is transferred into the boil pot (the yellow striped pot in the bottom back end of the picture). After we're done boiling and adding hops or whatever else we're going to add for a particular recipe, we'll transfer the wort into a 6 gallon plastic fermenter (picture a plastic bucket). All of this transferring is done via copper or stainless steel pipes, meaning we don't have to lift a damn thing during the brewing process. Not lifting 13 gallon pots with 5-10 gallons of 210 degree water in them is very +EV.

The above is the side view of our brewery setup. You can see the water pot I referred to in the last post a bit better (the top pot), as well as the mash tun (the middle pot) and the boil pot (the bottom right pot with the blue stripe in this picture). You can also see the fire on the water pot, our setup is powered by propane and there is a burner under each pot.

This is a picture of our removable sparge arm. Basically, after the water is added to the grain in the mash tun, it sits for about an hour, soaking up the sugars from the grain (this is called the mash). After this, you drain most of the water from the mash tun into the boil pot. But there are still sugars left in the grain, so you add some more water and drain it into the boil pot. This is called the sparge. You want a gentle flow of hot water going into the mash tun during the sparge, thus we took some copper, put a T on it and made small slits into it, giving the water a wide, yet soft flow into the mash tun.

Above is a picture of one of us adding the chopped up pumpkin into the boil pot. The copper tube is connected to the mash tun, we put a stainless steel, flexible hose on the end of it so that the wort from the mash tun transfers into the boil pot with minimal oxidation (I think that's the correct term off the top of my head). Basically, you don't want the wort falling into the pot and splashing around, you want minimal contact with air.

Our final picture is of the boil, after the hops are added. I'm sure most people think this looks disgusting. Normally the hops are put in a hop bag, so they aren't just floating around, mainly this makes for easier filtration from the boil pot to the fermenter, but our brewing supply store was out of hop bags, so we had to add them directly in the boil. It was a pain in the ass to filter them out afterwards, but it won't be a regular problem because we will have hop bags in the future.

I'll get some better pics up soon, but this should give you an idea of what I'm always talking about.

If anyone is in the Chicagoland area in 2-6 weeks, feel free to shoot me an email or message here if you'd like to try one of our brews.

Until then, have a good November.

Ship!

Sox in the playoffs, going to game 4 if we don't sweep em in 3.

Finished around +3k on the month, including wcoop cash and fpps. Not sure how I ran, I'd like to say bad but it's all moot, everyone always thinks they run bad. I was down 2kish at one point, so obviously could've been an ugly one, but I feel I fought through some swings. 6% ROi in 110s in 2 mans I played, rest were 4 man 220-330s with a few 2 mans mixed in at both those limits.

May add to the total, as my buddy is 14/18 in the nightly 70k and I have half the action.

Looking forward to next month's games, should be a fairly busy month with a wedding, the sox game, possibly a bear's game and we're also planning to have a little Halloween party.

Golfed shitty last Sunday, looks like I probably won't break 100 this year. I think I have a 25% shot at breaking 100 for the rest of the year outdoors, as I think I'll be lucky to get 4 more rounds in.

More updates soon, brewery maybe done tomorrow? Waiting on someone finish cutting and welding the kegs we're converting into 15 gallon brew pots.

Some thoughts as we leave summer..

Having some ups and downs lately, mainly just keep swinging within a 1500 dollar amount back and forth, but I feel like I haven't been playing great solo and my partner keeps running like absolute shit in the 4 mans I've done, so no worries.

I golfed a 105 Sunday, despite starting out the round terribly. I ended with a 3, 4, 4, 6, 5 I believe, on 2 par 3s and 3 par 4s, so that was a solid finish.

I have these two golf lesson vouchers at the local golf store, but they fired their trainer a few months ago and had not hired a new one last I checked.

I would really like to golf 2-3x a week next year, I have a lot of fun on the course and that should really motivate me to work hard this winter.

As my work season closes, I've had a few ideas for next year:

1) I've been thinking about some reinvestment in my company. Some new equipment that would allow me to expand my customer base and probably make some more sense long term, value wise.

2) Perhaps hiring somebody to work the business for me. All I would need is one dedicated person and then an employee to work with them. I could take care of all the phone calls, some of the estimates and the paperwork very easily and efficiently and stay a few steps ahead of the game. I don't like "grinding the trenches" of the business, per say. It's really tedious to go out there and do jobs every day, I don't want it to be my life and I don't want to drive around doing jobs all day. This would be a good opportunity to train somebody that wants to learn how to run a business, and make them a few bucks during the summer. At the same time, I could stay focused on hopefully another business by spring....

3) I've kicked around a few ideas for another small business. I've had some fuzzy plans with a few people on a few things, but nothing has been definitive yet. I hope to have some sort of new business/interest by spring. If I can get up my volume poker wise, I could probably just start something solely on my own and justify taking any risk involved, but I don't think I'll have to take many risks if I invest in something. When I started my current business, I spent a few grand on an old pickup truck and bought the cheapest equipment I could do top quality jobs with. I spent 2-3x as long on some jobs bc my equipment was so limiting, but I got the job done with an initial investment of only a few thousand dollars, compared to 10-20k minimum that the "veterans" will tell you is needed. So in the case of my first "real" business, I didn't take on much risk.

So those are a few of the ideas I've been thinking about lately, and will continue to think about and hopefully shape into a plan soon.

-----------

Husng.com is being finished. I have a webmaster who is updating me along the way. I don't want to give a definitive date, but the plan is 3 weeks now. You will know when it is up, believe me. I've had a few people ask about making videos on the site or helping in any way they can, and you can email or PM me on 2p2 your info if you are interested.

I know I've talked to a few people about it in the past, and I don't want to make any concrete plans about who's involved and what is giong on until the site is actually done (I've done that too many times and have finally learned my lesson). Just know, if I've talked to you before I'm still interested in having you on board.

Collin Moshman's HU book just came out. I got my copy yesterday, but haven't read it yet. I, along with a few other forum members are in the acknowledgments. I just want to say that myself and at least one other prominent person in there didn't have very much to do with this book (as far as we know). I personally helped Collin with a very brief thing in the book, so the book is basically 100% his ideas, thoughts and knowledge, though I am sure he was influenced and aided by the 2p2 HU forum in many ways (and he also thanks the whole forum). I am going to lead a discussion and review on the book in the HU forum as early as today.

--------

I'm kind of disappointed I didn't get into betting on this election cycle. I've watched a friend of mine making tremendous amounts of money off of this year's primaries and main election, and while I don't have the skills to take the positions and make the money he does, I'm sure I could have profited off of this in a decent way. I also enjoy politics, so a lot of the backwork is fun for me. Reading polls and crunching numbers in the political world is something I really don't mind doing and sometimes really enjoy. I think it's a little late for me to do much, it takes too long to get money on the sites I'd like to put money on, and there are only 40ish days left until the election, making my risk go up a great deal. Previously, if I take a few bad positions I can presumably counter those with good positions over time, but if I make a few mistakes this late in the game, I may not recover from them at all, there just may not be the ups and downs and inaccurate odds to take avantage of towards the end (I really think Obama will keep a firm lead in the last monthish. It's not hard to guage this, even on a non involved level, you will see candidates getting really desperate if they are too far back in the last few weeks. I think Palin was the first big gamble he had to take b/c he was down, and I still think it'll bite him. It seems the Palin bounce is about neutral now, she gave Mccain a huge boost coming out of hte convention, but her negatives have shot through the roof since then and Obama has taken back at least every bit of lead he had pre convention, according to all objective analysis.)

In the world of husng news.... other than Moshman's book coming out... Hokie and Primo both got dogs... Primo has moved to southern France... Bpmst2 (bcm's brother) has been moving up pretty steadily and seems to be doing well... xSCWx took 5th in the Sunday $215 hu mtt... Hokie has struck a deal with another player so that he plays the 300 regular speed games now... Whaassuuppp, a 200-500 regular, has created a blog (link on side)... Stevesbets seems to be back in the 5k games after winning the 25k Wcoop HU event... I'm sure everyone knows by now, but Livb has been playing the Stars 5k husngs under the name Adonis112 and has done fairly well by all accounts... Skilled_sox and Bcm11 seem to show no signs of letting up their domination in the 550-1100 buyin range, sharkscope has them each up near 30 thousand dollars in the last month...

That's all for now, good luck at the tables.

(Pics still to come, our brewery isn't done yet, sigh)

Update

Sorry about the lack of updates.

Moving was stressful and stuff, but worked out nicely. I'm so much happier in my new place.

Dboy and a few buddies stayed over for like 3-4 days during the move, making things more hectic but it was a good time.

I didn't get to play any games from like August 1st-14th, so I missed out on a lot of potential profit (fuck you Comcast) but I'm doing ok now.

I'll definitely put up pics, but I'm holding off until I get a new couch to replace our old 2nd couch we gave away, and until we finish our brewing setup. So probably by the end of the month.

I'll get to other things in the coming days, and will be updating much more frequently.

Short update

Been super busy, I'm in the process of moving to a new place.

Between that, 1.5x vpps and an increase in student interest, I haven't had a ton of free time.

I'll give a better update in the next week, and I promise pics of this place (I always promise pics then never come through, sorry).

Profit wise this month has sucked, everytime I start to break through on a heater variance seems to rear its ugly head.

Today started out OK, but then I lost 5 all ins without being dominated or against a PP and a 6th all in where I was dominated. I didn't win a single all in in that game, and at the low point in the 50-100 the guy had less than 200 chips after folding to a shove. That kind of stuff sucks, but I really really need to play so much more, I just haven't had the time it seems or been in the right state of mind when I have.

Stars Promotion For Husng Players

Hello Ryan,

I am pleased to be able to write to you with news regarding the HU S&G
portion of the 2X promotion.

For Weeks 3 & 4 of PokerStars 2X, we will be following your suggestion of
increasing the VPP awarded to 1.5x the normal amount. By doing this for 2
weeks, our HU S&G regulars will still get 2X the normal VPP they would
have earned for 2 weeks of non-bonus play.

Thanks very much for the suggestion! I hope that you enjoy the bonus for
heads-up players in weeks 3 & 4 of the PokerStars 2X promotion.

All the best,

Bryan S.
Tournaments Administrator
PokerStars Poker Room Management Team

Omgwtfnoway deserves credit for telling me "Man, I'd take 1.5 or even 1.25x vpps, ANYTHING."

Short Update

First off, I had a positive email exchange with somebody from Stars management.

I'm told that Stars will do something for us husng players during JULY. What it is has not been determined yet (as of a day or two ago), but several options have been discussed and are possible (check the thread I made on 2p2 for those options).

I've resumed play on stars. I had decided not to play until Stars resolved or promised that they would resolve this to me/us. I didn't really try to get anybody to boycott Stars, they area great site and I've had little to no beef with them in the past, and I was truly upset that they decided not to include us in this promotion. There had been talk of 2x vpp week for a month or two and I was really looking forward to it.

I will be sure to post any further updates if/when I receive word from them.

I've played a few 6 man STTs the last few days, mainly lower levels, 27-39s or what have you. I've ran pretty ugly but there is a small chance I could end up supplementing my hu play with these in the future. Likely not if they aren't soft enough at the 78-100ish levels, but that remains to be seen.

I've also done about a half dozen 200 regular speeds, I think I split them yesterday. I'll probably make that my regular game throughout July, playing some 110 turbos when I'm not feeling patient enough or disciplined enough and some 220 turbos if I'm playing well and we get a good husng promotion.

On the beer front, we just kegged a 9.5% double IPA. It's not fully carbonated, it should take up to 2 weeks to fully mature, but it's tasting delicious already. We also have a 10% or so imperial stout in the 2nd fermenter. We may have to repitch some yeast to get the final gravity down to an acceptable level, it's kind of on the high side now and may be a little too sweet. It could finish well over 12% abv. We put giant oranges in the boil and lactose as well. We'll also add some coffee before kegging, so it's going to be dubbed our "Dessert Stout." Quite a hefty dessert if I may say so myself.

Gotta cut this short bc I have to run, but I now have a coaching thread on the 2p2 forum. I'll link to it later on, but if anybody has any questions about coaching, you can read that thread first, otherwise PM or email me.

GL July.

Stars Promotion Discludes Husng Players

You can find more information here: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php?t=239054

Send an email if you get a chance and/or post in that thread. Hopefully Stars can give us a response this time and a positive one at that.

I'll have some more updates soon.

Traveling and Update

Sorry for the lack of updates, been a hectic week.

First off, my girlfriend's dad had a stroke Saturday night/Sunday morning. He seems to be doing ok, we visited him on Sunday.

Poker has been ok this month. I started out doing pretty well the first two weeks in terms of volume of games, falling slightly short of my 150 game goals. The third week was a waste, I was too stressed out and had too much going on to really play much.

Tonight I'm going on a little brewery tour with two of my friends, Tom and Clay.

We're leaving from Chicago this evening and heading to Holland, Michigan to New Holland brewery. We'll then be in Grand Rapids tonight for Founders, and stay the night there. My old 6 max buddy JJ will be meeting up with us for the first leg of the tour.

Tomorrow we'll head to Battle Creek/Kalamazoo/somewhere else I forgot, to go to Arcadia, Bell's and Dark Horse breweries before heading to Cleveland to hit Great Lakes and Willoughby before staying in Cleveland. I'm trying to have a drink with bcm and his brother bpmst that night, but I know he's moving into his new house so it may not happen.

Friday we'll head to Pittsburgh and to "Church Works Brew" or something similar to that for lunch. It's a brewery in a former church, the pics online looked really cool.

From there we'll head through DC to Delaware to DogfishHead brewery and spend the night there.

Saturday we'll head to downtown Philly and to Monk's Cafe, one of, if not the best Belgian beer bar in the US. We'll try to hit an Iron Horse brewery on the way out in the suburbs before getting to Selinsgrove Brewery in middle PA for early evening brews. We'll likely spend the night in Pittsburgh or Cleveland on Saturday and then head home on Sunday.

I'll have pics and beer reviews in the 2p2 beer thread (located in the lounge) and I'll throw up anything decent on here when I return.

I bought a Sprint broadband card for the trip with the laptop, so I may get a few games in, but not likely many, if any.

If by any chance you are in one of the cities I mentioned above and would like to grab a drink, feel free to leave a message on the board here and I'll contact you. Or PM me on 2p2 (ChicagoRy is my username), I'm not sure if I'll be able to get into my email on the road.
Until then, gl with the games.

Beer Tasting and Power Outage

Last Wednesday we had a beer tasting. Myself and my friend Clay had 4 of our beers on hand at my place, and our friends Tom and Steve brought over 3 of their own. We even bought a few cheeses to go with the different styles of beer, and grilled some hot dogs and burgers as well.

It went over really well, I was pretty impressed with their beers. They have been brewing for about 6 months (probably a year for Clay and I). They've had some struggles and almost quit a few times, but I really enjoyed their beers. Their stout was very flavorful and chocolaty. Their grapefruit ale tasted like it should have, and though I don't enjoy grapefruit, I did enjoy this beer. And finally, their maple syrup golden ale didn't really turn out as good as expected. They had some carbonating problems that hurt this beer, and despite 3 separate injections of maple syrup, it had no maple syrup flavor evident at all.

On our end of the tasting, we served our "dark witbier." It's kind of a new thing going on in Montreal/Quebec right now, based on some old recipes. We looked at a base recipe for this Belgian beer in a magazine and boosted the abv to 6.5%, changed the amount of coriander, dried licorice root and star anise as well as the time we added it to the boil. We also added our own little touch, using honey tangerine peels in the boil. This really made the beer, it is so refreshing and has a great Belgian yeast taste. The small amount of hops we used are just for balance. Very happy with how it turned out.

Our second beer was our hoppy red ale, or "Indiana Red Ale" IRA. Kind of a long story about the naming of that beer, so I'll skip it for now. This is a pretty solid red ale, very flowery aromas and pungent, almost smooth hopping, though it is very hoppy. Really good, off hand I think it's 6% abv.

We then went with our Imperial Stout. This was 8% abv, boosted by a little late sugar addition bc we weren't efficient enough with our grains. Vanilla lactose and coffee were added, the former at the flameout, the latter after the second ferment right before kegging. It's a very good beer, the coffee amount was very key this time. We added a little less lactose than our last stout, at the same time as the coffee. It wasn't very evident in the beer, however. I was pretty happy with our latest stout, I think we're only one or two batches away from our "ideal" stout. I think we're going to boost the chocolate malt, lactose and alcohol in the next batch and add some orange peels to make a little "orange chocolate dessert stout." 11% ABV sounds about right for a nightwarmer.

Our last beer was our previous "milk/coffee stout" that was 6%. It's very roasty and the coffee is really evident. There are strong hints of vanilla and perhaps some sort of dark fruit in it. Good beer, but more of a specialty beer for us rather than our "holy grail stout."

----------

So as you might recall, I have a 150 games a week requirement for myself.

Well, I had 10 games in by early Saturday afternoon, then went to pick up my mom's car at the auto shop and bring to her house. Turns out a huge line of storms were hitting and I ended up staying there for like 3-4 hours. An F1-F2 tornado swept through the area, damaging a lot of neighboring towns along the path, also knocking out the power in my town. We saw the huge funnel pass right over my mom's neighborhood, I was out back watching it with my brother. Leaves were falling from the sky, as well as the occasional stick.

The point is, I fell a little short with my games. I ended up at about 130 I believe, and would've had my goal if I wasn't screwed by our power problem. My town wasn't even hit with high winds or really much lightning, our power just goes out way too much.

I ended up spending the night on our deck. We picked up some firestarters and put them in our little tiny grill and made a fire. My buddy and I got a bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label and just bullshitted out there all night. Two guys from a few houses away that I know from high school came by as well to hang out for a bit. All in all the night was somewhat salvaged.

Our power was restored sometime between 3-5am, but went out this afternoon again for a few hours. We didn't even have storms today.

I went golfing this afternoon after a little bit of a rain delay, and on the 6th hole about 30 minutes south/west of my house we could see huge damage from the tornado. It touched down about 100 yards from the golf course, leveling a house, a barn, power lines and trees. It was pretty crazy.

I shot a rough 111, but this is a much harder course than we usually play. Still, I think I had 3 drives over 150 yards, I was just all over the place with my drives today. Nubbed a few, got under a few others and popped em up, just couldn't get it right until the last 3 holes. On the last hole I cracked the ball about 230-240 down the middle through a choke in the fairway. I always manage to hit a good drive on this hole, but this one was probably my best drive of the year. I've been using a 3 wood to drive the last few times out, my driver is messed up and I need to get a new driver head.

I also sunk an 80 foot or so putt from the fringe today, if it weren't for the fact that I was on the fringe and the ball hit the pin and went in I'd of probably been off the green. My speed was just way too fast but my line was pretty good for the speed. That saved me a bogie, ha.

Back to poker, I'm going to try to add the games that I missed due to the storm to the rest of my 3 weeks of the month. I realize I've only accounted for 28 days in my "150 per 7 days" goal for June, so I should also have a few extra days of play. Topping 600 games would be huge for me.

I'll have some other stuff coming up to talk about soon as well.

June Goals and Updates

I'll begin with poker and the last month, etc.

I did ok in May, though I feel I ran below expectation. I didn't really take many 220 shots, I ended up going 0-3 in the 220s and 3-0 in the 200s, but the way things were going I didn't really want to risk a big run of variance wiping out any monthly gains, so I just didn't take any meaningful shots. I also seemed to run the worst when I was playing my best AND wanting to take the 220 shots, so it just didn't work out. I'm not too worried though. I shouldn't have to really cash out any more this summer unless I want to, so my online br should be more than enough to not worry about -2k or worse days every now and then.

I played a ton more at the end of May and for once it didn't feel like work, I actually did not mind it at all.

I'm going to continue with that motivation and mindset into June and as per Bcm's suggestion I'm going to make a few goals.

First, I want to play a minimum of 150 110s a week. There's no reason why I can't do this, especially considering the swings are really not bothering me much at all anymore, despite my lack of putting in games (which basically equates to downswings lasting longer than a week sometimes compared to 1-3 days if I played regularly, much less stressful).

I'm not really going to be worried about a monetary goal at the moment, but after I get to +2500 this month I'm going to take a prolonged shot at the 220s and hopefully run decent/continue to play well in them. I may loosen my games/week once I get into the 220s, but not by much, mainly b/c of the whole "longer downswing if you don't play much" theory.

I am, however, cutting myself off of the Dark Lord beer (previously mentioned in the blog) until I book a 10k month. I'll include all forms of poker for that goal, as I have played a little hu cash lately and will continue to work on playing more. This will no doubt provide some motivation for me to play a lot more at a higher level and take smart, focused shots. It will also probably provide me with Dark Lord until my birthday in November (I have 10 22oz bottles of it left, I drank one and gave one to my good friend for his graduation from college).

I also will set a minimum of 3 days to be stuck on the same number (in thousands) of vpps for the month. Basically, this means if I had 0 vpps on June 1st I would have until the end of June 3rd to have over 1k vpps. If I got to 1k vpps on June 2nd I would have until the 5th to break 2k vpps, etc. This means I'm playing a minimum of 40 games every 3 days, and usually more. It should ease the burden of making up to the 150 games goal every 7th day.

In other poker news, bcm's blog is shutdown again, croixdawg is starting his up again. Primo is in vegas chilling with cwar, hokie is in AC and I'm sure a lot of people are heading to the WSOP. Good luck to everyone in the series, especially those of you in the HU event.

I started work on redoing the 2p2 HU forum sticky thread, I reorganized and added some new husng links, so check them out if you haven't already. There's some good info in there.

In non poker news, my business has been picking up finally. The weather is finally getting good so I can work when I need to and people are wanting work. Things are getting low stress finally and I'm almost at the point where the work is 100% routine, but still a few kinks I'm working out.

A few weeks ago I weighed myself and I was about 35 lbs heavier from the last time I had checked my weight (In the hospital in January, so perhaps I had lost 5-10 lbs?). I attribute most of this from quitting smoking, also perhaps an increase in the calories of the beer we've brewed, but we don't measure the calories in our beer so I can't be sure (we have made much heavier, stronger beers, so I'd assume they are going up in calories).

I'm not too worried about it but I'd like to lose some of that, I felt I was an ideal weight in January. Since that last weighing I've checked myself once since then and was 10 lbs lighter, so who knows. I've been walking a lot at night and trying to bring the girlfriend along as well. I've also passed out a lot of flyers for my business, so that has helped increase my exercise.

I'm thinking ahead to some longer term options, and might buy my brother and I a membership at the health club near him this fall/winter. I used to play racquetball with my dad and brother when I was younger and it was fun, but mainly to play basketball. I love basketball and despite being really out of shape in terms of endurance I am still pretty solid. A rec league or something similar would be really fun. I know of a really competitive one in the city, but that would be longer term, as I would have to really be on the top of my game/in shape to play with those guys.

I'm going to have to cut this short, but I'll update more frequently this month.

Good luck to you all and expect another Q and A post very soon.

June Goals Coming Soon

Sorry for the lack of updates, I really want that rematch button so I figured I'd leave that post up for longer than usual. Hopefully that ends up happening soon.

Went to the horse track tonight for my buddy's graduation party. He's graduating from the Art Institute of Chicago. It was a blast, he won like 100 bucks on the second to last race, and my other buddy who I brew with won 180 on the last race, after being down about 100.

I ended up making like 3-5 bucks after being up 20, not really very dramatic. I know a guy who's sister works at the track so I was trying to get tips and get some sort of an edge or less of a -EV spot on the races. I feel I bet pretty well in the end, but wasn't super interested. It was just a good time to get out and drink a bunch of beer with my buddies on a great night.

The month ended up ok, I ran below expectation in 110s and only ended up playing 4 220s. I lost all 4 but won all 4 200 regular speeds I played, so 4-4 in 220/200s this month. I made like 2200 overall playing 110s this month and had to flip 5 550s w Skates to get my 10k vpps. I played so little in the early part of the month I had to play like 90+ games in the last 3 days of play to get near my 10k vpps.

Despite running kind of trashy in the last 3 days, I still felt I played pretty well and didn't really get too stressed playing more games in one day than I ever have before (45). Hopefully I can build on this and put in a very good month for June. Correction, I will put in a much better month. I've kind of sifted below potential for way too long with my work ethic in poker, so it's about time I actually put in a quality month. June should be that month.

I'm gong to outline a list of goals for June tomorrow night or Monday. This will include husngs and hu cash goals. I'll factor in a few hrs a week of coaching plus my business hours, but even with that if I work hard I SHOULD put in more hours playing than I have since I started about 17 months ago.

Speaking of my business, things are starting to pick up. The weather has been shit so I haven't been working as much as expected, but today it finally passed 80 degrees, so it's only a matter of time before every day is 80+ and the lows stop dipping below 50 (I can't work if the low is below 50).

I'll update with goals and such in the next day or two, I also will have a strategy post or two coming very soon and maybe even a surprise or two in June.

If anybody wants to send any poker questions to me, feel free to email me. My email is listed in previous posts.

Wanted: Rematch Button on Pokerstars

I think it would be a very good thing for everybody if Stars implemented a "rematch" button in their husngs, similar to what Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet have.

I've started a thread in the HU forum on 2+2. It is basically a semi-organized effort to make this happen.

I'd like to ask the readers of this blog to please fire off an email to Stars. For an email ALREADY WRITTEN for you and 3 email addresses to send it to, please check out this thread HERE .

If you have any questions about the rematch button and/or the effects of it, please drop me a message here or PM me on 2+2.

Thanks for your help.

I Am Now A Moderator...

....On 2+2's Heads Up (NL) forum.

Cwar IMed me last week talking about the forum traffic going up since the HU forum moved under the NL title. He mentioned that if it got any busier he'd put in a request for another mod and asked me if I'd be interested.

Basically I just tag posts that aren't tagged and lock/delete really off topic-vague/general stuff and send a PM to the people that did this. Nothing sexy, nothing tough.

The end of week/weekend went pretty well. I got 12 bottles of the infamous Dark Lord.

I haven't had one yet, I'm going to wait until I finish this month (motivation lol).

I heard that in mid May Stars is doing a double VPP promotion. As far as I know this is not official or announced, so I wouldn't mark your calenders or anything (Hokie actually told me, so he can take the credit for it being right/wrong).

In other news, I have a few other stakes/investments in the poker world that are going so so right now. One is going pretty well and the other is kind of just going average. Neither are going bad or terrible or stressing me out, so that is key.

This week looks to be very shitty weather, haven't started working for my business yet (though I've set up some work) and probably won't til at least this weekend now. You'd think by early May the overnight low would stay to over 50 F.

Not much other news, I still want to get a strat post up and if by some miracle I finish my monthly games early I'll definitely post one.

Links Update

I updated my links list.

I prefer to have players that primarily play husngs on the list (as of now Andrew Ferguson is the only non husng-majority player on the list, though I met him in a 55 husng and he is the founder of PS money).

I've added some notable higher stakes husng players, people like Croixdawg, NoFear, PrimordialAA and MaxV2. Primo is really the only one updating his blog (though it's new), but hopefully some of these other guys will start doing it.

And maybe Bcm can open a new blog (cough cough).

May you suck out on many rivers until my next post.

April Hate

I've only played 33 games in the last 7, compared to like 200 in the first 14 days of April.

I'm still down in April, but only because of my bad 50 game run at the 220s.

Stress level has been up this month as I'm prepping my business for the season (probably start first job Sunday). There has also been a lot of beer events and band events going on (Two different bands I know are made up of friends of mine that took a hiatus for the last 6 months decided to start playing again this month). So yea, pretty busy and I haven't handled my 220 downswing coupled with a standard 110 downswing very well. Thus, I've limited my playing time which has kind of frustrated me more, but I can't really force myself to play b/c I know it's a bad decision.

I'll have to figure out how I'm going to get to 10k vpps again this month, I had over 6k at the halfway point of the month despite some bad variance and now I only have 7k.

My upcoming schedule looks something like this:

Wednesday: Ready some equipment for the business, prepare business flyers, finalize opening month budget.

Thursday: Pass out flyers, attend tapping of new beer at brewery for mug club.

Friday: More flyers, attend pre DLD festivities later at night at the brewery.

Saturday: AM: Attend Dark Lord Day at Three Floyd's Brewery. It's a once a year festivity where the brewery sells (6 per person) 22oz bottles of their famous "Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout." It's generally rated as one of the top 1-3 beers in the world (I think it was 1-2 on most big lists this year).

Not sure how long this will last, but if I'm out of there at a reasonable time I'd imagine I'll be doing job estimates Saturday evening.

Sunday: At a minimum do 2 jobs, training my little brother b/c he wants to be my main worker this summer (he's 17 going to be a SR. in HS next year). Attempt to schedule them so we can make a late afternoon round of golf with my father and grandpa.

There's also some sort of 7 course dinner with 7 beers at the brewery later next week. I forget when.

So yes, busy schedule, kind of a stressful and frustrating month, hopefully I can just focus and have good results and go on some sort of a grinding tear in my downtime.

I'll try to get another big strat post done before May but no promises.

Facing a limp

(Or why you should resist the temptation of raising limps over and over and over again)

You probably get what I'm going to advocate in this post.

First, the following is a response to another question from Spacko about "when you should raise limpers." It's a very general question but I notice that even good players often have a general problem with how they approach this area of the game.

Lets begin by looking at reasons why people raise limps.

**We'll assume that effective stacks are a relatively deep 40-75bb, unless otherwise noted.

1. Our hand is better than the range of hands villain will call with.
2. We think villain will fold a tremendous amount of time and we will raise for the fold equity. You could call this a bluff-raise.
3. We have a great read on villain and have found an exploit in their game (fairly rare early on). For example, a player that calls almost ATC preflop but is very weak/tight postflop. You would want to get chips in the pot preflop to steal postflop.

There are no doubt other reasons you can raise a limp, but the most common will be similar to the 3 above.

We'll start with raising for pure hand value. A common reply to "why did you raise his limp with that hand (we'll say a hand like QTo)?" is "he'll call with worse hands." That is probably true, a lot of villains will limp and then call a 3-5x raise with a lot of worse hands. But unfortunately, many people don't consider other factors of the hand besides the hand values.

The first factor of the hand that a lot of people ignore is position. You're out of position, so you're at a disadvantage (the deeper you are the more this is true). This will weaken your holding/value somewhat.

Another factor is postflop play. How does your opponent play postflop? What is his calling range? What is his limping range? If you're having trouble answering any of those questions, raising a medium-strong hand like QTo OOP for around 4x the bb is probably not going to put you in good spots postflop.

As an example of how crucial it is to know most if not all of these things about your opponent, I'll point you to a recent thread in 2+2: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthread.php?t=177357

In this thread, Skates (a 220-550 regular) raised Heir Apparent's (a very solid 200/220 regular) limp with what you could call a "medium-strong" hand. He assumed that Heir would raise any ace preflop, so therefore an ace could not be in his calling range. Based on that assumption, it would be a pretty easy call based on Heir's line (call, c/c, c/bet). However, Skates even admitted that he was pretty confused about the hand/line and it turns out Heir had a weak ace. Throw aces into Heir's range and it would be a pretty clear fold on this river.

Moving on, the other big reason people will give when raising a limp is "he's only limping weak hands, he'll probably fold."

While this is fine reasoning, this is generally not worth doing until effective stacks (in bbs) are pretty small (think like < 30bbs deep). Most players will adjust after you raise their limps a few times, so you're not going to want to pick up their 20 or 30 chips once or twice when you have 1500 chips and then have to figure out how they are adjusting later on. Knowing they are limping weak and/or folding often is going to be much more valuable when you can pick up 50-100 chips each time or more appropriately, 5-15% of their stack a pop.

I'll touch on one other point about limp raising before I conclude, and that would be to think about what it means to face a limp. Are you really worried about a player limping his button when stacks are deep? You shouldn't be. Most players are losing value by constantly limping their button when stacks are deep, so why should you abuse that leak early on and force them to raise more often in position and generally play more aggressively throughout the game? It is my belief that you should not.

Now lets quickly touch on when you should raise limps.

-The blinds are a big % of the effective stacks. 5-15% is probably a good rule of thumb for when you really want to be paying attention and looking for spot to raise limps for fold equity.

-You really have a good grasp on this villain and his calling range as well as his postflop play.

-Your hand is very strong. I would never suggest checking a hand like 99 or AK in the big blind when a player limps. With a hand like this, your hand is just too strong to not want to build a pot, position or not, good reads or not.

Building off of that, my default raising range for low-mid stakes husngs would be 55+, A9s, ATo+, KJs+, KQo+.

That range would change as effective stacks, game flow and reads developed and changed, but on the first hand of a 22 dollar husng that would be my suggest raising range facing a limp from a random player.

To conclude, in general I would suggest letting players limp early but especially paying attention to limp ranges, reactions to aggression and postflop play of villains so that you can take advantage of poor play as effective big blinds get shallow and leaks grow tremendously. A good way to gain this information is to mainly only raise strong hands early on when facing a limp, and to deviate from that strategy as the conditions above warrant.

I hope you enjoyed this post, if you have any questions or comments about this post or about anything having to do with husngs in general you can leave them here or email me (ryan.ryryp13(insert the @ symbol bc of spammers) gmail.com).

Quick Update

Sorry for the lack of updates, I'll have a full update with a new question answered in the next few days.

Been playing 220s and the 110 4 mans w Hokie, that's about it for April so far. Off to a decent start.

March ended like +3500, I think I made like 4k in the last week or 2. I SHOULD have no trouble surpassing that in April, provided I keep playing well. I also should surpass that if I put in like 15 hrs a week (I finished just below that for March), as I'm in the 220s for good now.

I'm going golfing tomorrow, but other than that am busy as hell in the next week setting up my business for the spring-fall season and doing taxes for last year.

I'm also looking for a new place. The investment stuff with my buddy has kind of hit the skids as tax season rolls around, so who knows what's going on with that in the short term.

My brother decided he doesn't want to play football for his senior year. He would be the starting qb, so I'm kind of not happy about his decision but not nearly as upset as my dad and especially grandpa will be (maybe he'll tell them while we're golfing tomorrow?).

I'll probably make a post this month to wrap up personal stuff in the blog for good and only give personal updates for major events in my life and/or little tid bits of something I'm doing that might interest some readers. I'll start to attempt to post MORE STRATEGY since people seem to enjoy poker stuff on a poker blog (orly?).

Until then, make money.

Questions

The feedback from the first question was pretty positive, so I'm going to continue to answer questions for now. Send in as many as you'd like. ryan.ryryp13@gmail.com

That's it for now. Just been playing 110s for the last half of the month, I seem to be running pretty well in those and not very good in the 100-200 regulars (or 220 turbos for that matter).

I think I've finally improved my game enough to where I am truly a solid 110 winner. Over my last 850ish games I'm a 6-7% ROI. Considering over 1k+ samples the highest winner I can find is 10% at that level, I'm fairly content with that. Obviously I'm still learning a lot, always, but I feel my days at the 110s are finally numbered, despite many half shots, short periods of higher play, etc.

Here's to a good rest of March.

Q and A Update

The first question in the Q and A is from Marchy in Germany. His blog can be found at www.maerchy.blogspot.com (Germany only). Perhaps he can also recommend some good German beers to us as well.

Question: How do you handle players who minbet (1/4 to 1/3 of the pot about) 90% of the flops?
At the moment i play the 33s on FullTilt and there are lots of these guys. I just cant stand
them because i really dont know what the best strategy is against them.

---

This is a very good question. This is something I struggled with early on in my husng progression and I'm sure many others have or do struggle with as well.

There are a few things I like to keep in mind when dealing with min bettors:

1) We're usually dealing with a very wide range of hands, so we should not try to narrow their hand range down based on actions that do not warrant it.

2) Our odds of calling a min bet on the flop are much greater than on the turn, therefore we'll probably be calling a lot more often on the flop and we shouldn't be worried about folding turns.

3) We want to be careful about getting overzealous about raising them too often in small pots and folding to the min bet too often in bigger pots.

Keeping those points in mind, here are a few things I like to do against min bettors:

- Figuring out if they will min bet 3 streets with strong hands (top pairs+), good draws (flush draws, OESDs, weaker pair combo draws), weak draws (low flush draws, gutshot straights, overcards) and outright "bluffs" (weak hands that need runner runner to beat most hands that will play a big pot).

If they are not following the same betting pattern with all of these hands, then I want to try to find out which hands that they are deviating from their min bet strategy with and what they are doing instead.

- I want to also figure out how they react to a raise. I generally want to raise a stronger hand first, because most min bettors are going to be too loose and call with a lot of hands they should not on the flop, at least in the early portion of our match. If I notice a fold I'll try again, perhaps with an outright bluff or semi bluff, if they fold again I start to see they are weak and will throw in a good amount of bluff raises along with semi bluff and strong hands and wait until they adjust.

While I may not always get action on my strong hands, the raises are most likely going to frustrate the player.

- It might not be too difficult to win when you are hitting cards/boards vs these players, but what about when you are card dead and the boards just aren't hitting your starting hands?

In these cases, you really have to pay attention to how you are playing your high cards, how often you are chasing without the correct odds and other decisions you make in marginal/close spots.

If a player is going to min bet every street with any hand, it's going to be correct to call down with a hand like A high. If you notice he is starting to check hands that are really weak or that have no showdown value, you're going to want to adjust and starting folding high cards to his bets.

A few things you'll want to avoid are bluffing off a lot of chips because "I haven't bet big in awhile, he has to respect me here" or "he bets every street, he can't call a few raises from me."

Be careful on taking raises too far. If you bluff raise his min bet on the flop and he calls, be weary about following through on the turn. Don't blindly spew chips against these players, that is how they are going to win because they usually don't get enough value out of their bigger hands and end up letting you build pots when you want with stronger hands.

A few other lesser points that I want to make about playing min bettors:

- Don't over or under raise them. For example, if they bet 30 into a 200 pot on the turn, raising your weak top pair to 400 is going to be an over raise. On the flip side, raising 3x to 90 is going to probably be an under raise. Often times against constant min bettors, I almost "ignore" their small bet and just raise them to what I would bet if they had checked. In this case it would be a 130-160 type turn bet (raise) that I would make.

- Like I said earlier, be aware of the odds you are being offered compared to their presumably very wide range of hands. You also want to be aware of the odds you are offering them. If their drawing hands are 20-25% likely to hit the river, you don't want to "keep them in the pot" with an under raise that offers them the correct odds to draw. They will likely make the mistake of calling without odds, so don't be too worried about pushing them out of the pot with a 4-5x raise. In fact, your raises will often be over 4x the bet against min bettors.

In conclusion, since this is a player and situations you're probably not dealing with on a regular basis, you might have to think a little longer/harder when facing the min bettor. While I gave a lot of general advice, you should find enough above to effectively combat the min bettor and to get you thinking in the right direction against almost all of them.

I'd say above all, awareness is key against these players, and the most common mistake is a lack of discipline and emotional control when dealing with these players. The same can go for the opposite end of the spectrum, the aggro-maniacs, though it is not just a simple "take this advice but apply it in the opposite direction." That, however, is another day and another blog post.

Let me know if this helped you or if you agree/disagree with my advice. Also, feel free to send more questions to me, ryan.ryryp13@gmail.com

Busy

I have a few questions, I'm working on answering them for the blog, I've just been pretty busy, sorry.

March starting off "meh" just like most of February was. I'm up very little over about 20 hrs played.

I'm helping run my Uncle's autobody shop Mon-Wed bc he's on vacation, so I'll try to have a post up by Thursday with at least one question answered.

Keep sending questions though if you have anything to ask about husngs (or anything else I suppose you think I'm qualified to answer).

Q and A

So I want to try something on the blog.

I have no idea what you guys want me to post as far as strategy goes. In the past I've done a few "big pots played today" posts where I briefly go through each major hand I played and post some thoughts on them.

Some people seem to enjoy this, others say I should post less hands and go into more detail about them.

So... I think I want to try a question and answer thing for awhile, and see how that goes.

First, I want to make it clear that I am by no means correct on every/any decision or opinion I make in regards to husngs. But by answering your questions, I think I can help a lot of newer/lower level players and perhaps even inspire some good discussion or thoughts from the players at or above my level of play/thinking.

So send questions to ryan.ryryp13@gmail.com (Please title them "HU Q" and you can leave an attribution or request anonymity if I decide to post it here)

As far as what your questions are to be about... anything involving husngs. I'll try to pick out the most common questions or most interesting ones and answer them (assuming I get any emails).

Just try not to give me like 3 full hand histories and say "based on the reads in these games..." or something crazy like that.

Until then, run good.

Quick Update

I was told to post this.

15% or so winner in the regular speeds, this PF play wasn't indicative of his game as a whole, but he wasn't THAT great. Again, not someone I'd want to play all the time, but he must have ran well over his sample (I think maybe 500 games?).

Properties, Variance and Beer

Moving closer to making an offer on a piece of investment property. I wouldn't say it's even near certain that we can negotiate with them, the property we're interested in is owned by a former realtor.

Been looking at a few other properties, but nothing terrific.

Have encountered a lot of variance this month, I'm working on adjusting my play to minimize these periods of struggle. I think I've been a little too loose with certain hands, but I feel I'm hitting a lot of the strong part of people's ranges. Time will tell.

I've moved to regular speeds to close out the month, my hourly is probably higher in these and the variance lower (though you wouldn't tell from my first 40 in the last 2 days). I can play a lot more games at these levels too, something I may go into in more depth in the future (see 2+2/hu forum thread about regular vs turbos). I'm down like 500 on the month actually, not counting a few hundred in FPP bonuses.

I ended up like +150 in the turbos this month and hit a wall of variance in the regular speeds from the get go. I was hoping I'd be up in the 200s again soon, but until I'm at least around +500 for the month that probably won't happen.

I also cleared the 100k fpp 1500 dollar bonus I bought in late January, so I have a little br boost.

In other poker news, I've added two new students, one is a personal friend and long term project that I am pretty excited about. I'll talk more about this in the future.

On the beer front, we have an Imperial Stout in the fermenter. We're very excited about this beer, it should end up 8-10% ABV, and will have lactose, vanilla extract and some really really tasty German chocolate coffee in it. Should be ready in 3 weeks at the earliest.

We'll be making a new beer Wednesday, we're not sure what kind yet. Probably a nut brown ale or another IPA since our last IPA turned out so great. Not quite sure yet, will figure that out tomorrow. We also have some extra hops, so we'll probably do a 2.5 gallon batch as well, and maybe do some crazy type of beer for that one.

I actually kept the yeast from our last beer, they say the 2nd or 3rd time you use the yeast is when it is at its best, so we'll experiment with our 2.5 gallon batch there (usual batches are 5 gallons for us).

I'll post some strategy soon, until then, take care.

Grinding Back

Had a great day yesterday, made back a little under 900 of this month's 1600-1700 in losses in like 20 games.

Made another 150ish today, so I'm within a good day or two of getting back in the black.

I can't wait to get back to the 200-220s, I'm thinking about playing some 200 regular speeds again, 2-3 tabling them. This latest downswing has really made me realize the amount of variance in the turbos, even for the top players (not saying me, but looking at the top ppl's stats/ROIs).

It's not that I'm afraid of the variance, it's that I don't play enough games to completely disregard it. If I could play 25-30 games a day, 6 days a week, I think I'd handle the variance fine. I can't or don't do that, at least not at this point.

Another thing that favors going a lower variance route is my business. I'll be starting up in about a month and a half, so I'll be playing a lot less in April, but probably will be playing just slightly less than now once things fall into a groove.

I just really don't want to have like 5 losing days in a row, that shit is really annoying, especially when you feel like you're playing well. The only solutions I can see is to play more games or play lower variance games. The lower variance games are probably better for my hourly/money anyways right now, so there's no reason not to do those. I might try to do like 10-15 regular speed 200s a day, then 5 220s as well. I'm not really sure yet, I need to make some of this loss back from this month first.

It's been really cold out, I've been in a fairly crabby mood the last few days. I'd really like to walk a mile or two a day, especially since I quit smoking, it can really suck just sitting around all day in a fairly small place.

My girlfriend got her new car, her dad finally gave her the money he was supposed to in early January. It's an 04 Concorde, we got it from my uncle who owns an autobody shop. Much better than my Cavalier she's been driving for the last year and a half. When I say driving, I mean tearing apart. That thing is lucky if it can last another 5k miles.

Today we realized the full extent of our landlord's stupidity. It's tough to call him a landlord, he lives about 45 minutes away, owns a ton of real estate properties, and manages none of them. He owns a very successful sports equipment/clothing store that supplies a lot of Chicagoland with that stuff. I've never met him, he was supposed to come out here like a dozen times since June, but no dice. He never calls people back, it's really hard to get him on the phone.

Anyways, yesterday we got a message from the realtor lady that found the place for us. She said that our landlord wanted to evict us, but we could pay our rent or else or something along those lines. A real bitchy message. Well we paid our January rent, our February was due the 6th I guess, but we were supposed to be called about concerns we had with the place, mainly that we cannot use about 60% of what we are alloted bc a drug addict steals stuff from the storage. That and we are missing like 6 storm windows, are owed for a water bill from before we lived here and a few other little things. The realtor lady was supposed to call us back about that stuff because the landlord never did.

Long story short, we talk to the landlord today on the phone, he never got the January check. After digging around in his store, he found it. That is what this problem was about. We paid the rent January 6th, and he never fucking called us when he didn't receive it. We told him we were dropping it off, but nothing for a whole month about it, just a bitchy call from someone else.

So he SAYS he is going to call us in the next few days to address our concerns. This is yet to be seen. In the meantime, I am getting free lessons on how not to manage a rental property.

Speaking of which, still haven't found our first investment. I've probably seen about a thousand properties online, of which maybe half were liveable areas, and about 2% of those have met the minimum requirements to make some decent money. It's pretty ridiculous around here, what newbies/ignorant people will pay for rental properties. People are actually willing to operate at a loss in order to have a "cheap long term investment." Like a high risk, low reward retirement account, lol.

Anyways, that's about all from the Diary.

One step forward, three steps back.

Fairly rough day.

Lost 6 buyins, should be down like 4 or 5, but I made some key mistakes in read dependent situations.

I had finally gotten within reach of this month's negative losses, but now it's back to like -1200 or so. I'm going to be playing more, bc I really need to get back to the 220s by the end of this month. I'm not going to play enough 110s to get my 10k vpps this month, and I think I only got like 4k last month bc I was sick 3/4+ of the month.

I also looked at a 2 unit house with a third unit coach house today. It had a little bit more updating needed than would be ideal, as we already need to cut the price down a fair amount to make the deal work for us. So this unit is pretty unlikely to happen. We will see though, but I'm looking forward to finding our first deal that works and getting the hell out of my current place.

Bcm closed his blog down, I think for good this time. It's a shame, but I understand where he's coming from with it, so good luck to him as he continues to beat the 550-1100s.

Phenom seems to have closed his blog too, I haven't talked to him so I don't know why, but again, kind of sucks.

I added a counter to my blog because I'm curious as to how many people actually read/view it. It counts unique views, so each number should represent a different person/pc.

I'm going to update my links after I make sure Phenom's blog is done for good, I have a few of you to add that left comments in my blog and also Tnixon from 2+2 has just created his 2nd blog (his first got shut down due to some spam filter problem).

I'm going to take a few people's advice and post a little less hands, and try to find a little more in depth situations to post about. When I do please let me know how you feel about doing that opposed to a more "post every big hand of the day with quick summary comments."

Updates

Running pretty bad in February, overall playing pretty well though I've lost focus a few times and took lines I shouldn't have (a few more times than usual, I by no means always take the best lines lol).

I'll get to all the links to other blogs tomorrow (I'm about to sleep now), thanks for linking me for all those that have.

So I'm down a bit over a grand this month, but I actually made about a grand last month despite only playing 18 games (I made a few hundred through a stake). I'm not too worried about the downswing, after the last few days in December, I can really handle anything that is thrown at me and am not too worried about tilting in the near future.

Quitting smoking is kind of weird too. I've definitely had a few urges but it's really more of a joke when I think about it, it's not like I'm going to go buy a cigarette and smoke it, that's ridiculous.

I do notice it's harder for me to sleep, but the emotional swings of poker haven't been there like they used to, smoking probably actually contributed to some of that.

I've also noticeably improved my game since probably mid to late December. The mental aspect more so in late December, but my actual game has gotten a lot better I think in the last month, despite the lack of games played.

I don't really have time for a hand by hand analysis, but here's some big hands of today, including suckouts of both players and probably a few good and bad calls by me.

I know I was thinking "he hasn't been very aggressive so I think bet/call is better than check/raise all in." I definitely didn't think I could fold this flop, and didn't really put him on a PP like that. I figure there's some PPs I factor into his range but at this point I'm guessing he either calls with a few PPs or calls with none PF here.

I suppose his 77 call is good if I play strong aces like this, but I'm outflopping him with my PPs way too often on these 3-bets I think, and I have 6 outs when I miss compared to his 2 (he also folds the better hand whereas I never do with my 3-bet range here).

So, in this case it worked out for him, but it probably does not after looking at my range vs this stationy type of player (aka I'm 3-betting for value 95% of the time vs him, not fold equity pre or post flop).

I expected some sort of draw, maybe a pair or over cards here most often, and the pot justifies the call I believe here. Post some thoughts if you disagree, I'm open to hearing any of them.

At this point you're probably like "damn Ryan, you run like god." But we'll call up to this point, "Part 1." Get ready for a more action packed Part 2. I'm up like 3 buyins or so at this point, clawing my way back from a bad February start.

It was a cold February night in Chicago.....

I know it looks questionable, but my thought process here is this player is a very solid and tight winner (he sat like instantly after me, so probably a "sit at same time" thing) and I know he thinks I'm bluffing here very often. I know I can also respect further strength from him bc he doesn't seem to bluff in these spots, but he also won't be value betting some hands that beat me (like K6). So while I lost the hand, I don't think I regret the way I played this.

Leading here would be nice vs a less disciplined player, but I really like to lead monsters and air on dry boards when I lead, which I don't do often enough in raised pots (I think there's tons of value in it but you can really lose a lot of value if you don't do it well).

I started min raising deeper than usual in the 15-30 against him because he wasn't calling ANYTHING OOP all game. It's rare that I'm calling more OOP than my opponents, but this was the case. So I tried to 3-bet more with air, call with strong hands and really stay TAG OOP. The minraising was to encourage him to call more and to able me to widen my raising range on the button to practically any two cards.

In regards to this hand, I think he has a flush almost never here, and a straight very rarely. I highly doubt he calls even with trips on this river and believe my raise offers the right odds for the amount of times he folds, making it a fairly profitable play for myself. Keep in mind he's a very tight and disciplined player (and pretty solid winner, 7% in 110 turbos over big samples).

This was a weird hand. I thought I was good 20% of the time on the river here, but if he's betting 66 here (which I have no clue why, even if I call with Kx it's a losing bet) then I'm probably not winning 20% of the time. This is a misread, but he might have been kind of getting annoyed/frustrated with the game. I'd been shoving over his raises a bit, but who knows.

I think this is a pretty bad play on his part, I'm definitely not calling any lighter than what he shoves here, even if I was calling with a few more aces I'm fairly well ahead of his range, and he's only stealing 200 when he steals off me. He does have a lot of fold equity here, but I still don't think it's a very good play (though he doesn't know my calling range and is used to the same opponents I am, ppl that open up from the sb PF a lot often call light too).

Anyways, I felt I played well in this game. I've played him before and I'm sure I'll play him again.

Here's hand #2, I really fucked up this game. I think this was the hand that made me take a break, I really think he bluffs this turn way way way too often for me to think about checking.

I don't have solid reads bc I didn't read all the little hands and I don't recall them for this game, but I know I was upset about this line. PF I'm pretty sure was fine based on game flow or reads or whatever, or I don't think I'd of done it (or would remember being upset about that too).

This is the kind of stuff that actually hurts winrates though and makes downswings worse.

This hand I played like I wanted to. His flop hands he was very passive on, and I didn't want to scare him off or kill my equity by waiting for a turn to let him bluff. If I had played the last hand correctly I might have been even stacked. I suppose that wouldn't make a difference, he'd of just folded the worse hand here. The previous hand still upsets me though.

This was going on at the same time as the last game, I remember reading this board like 4x to make sure the flushes didn't hit (Another sign of losing focus). His raise was ridiculous, if you're going to raise you can't raise over 5x.

After this hand he shoved EVERY SINGLE HAND for literally 10 hands in a row. My best hands were JT and Q4, marginal even if I got them at hands 9 and 10, but they came on his first two hands of shoving, so there was no way I even entertained a call. Unfortunate I couldn't get something to call here, but oh well. He stopped shoving when he evened up with me (great strategy).

Once again, pretty horrible stuff. He'd limped throughout the game (except during his shoving period) and I'd raised his limps about zero times so far. What am I shoving with that he is ahead of? This is good proof for "people don't think about your hand, only their own." I always say this on 2+2 to newer players at lower levels, but this is even true at the 110s (hard for some to imagine, but this isn't really "rare").

This is a bad hand on my part, mainly because of how weak he played AK last time. Why do I not respect his turn raise? I tread a thin line between being a spewy station and being a solid bluff catcher, and this hand is fairly spewy for me.

This might also be a spot where 2 tabling hurts me. I should've snap folded this turn as played, no reason at all to think he's bluffing based on how the game has gone so far (I'm almost positive, I didn't check out and don't recall EVERY hand up until this point, so everything above can be wrong, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say this play was pretty bad on my part). But anyways, I think if I'm single tabling here I focus a lot more and make snap reads a lot more often.

I felt this was kind of bullshit, I was faced with a kind of mediocre turn decision, because this player makes it a 3-bet, though not a very fun one.

You take the good with the bad though against this player, I just hated having to reraise the turn against him for value here.

I actually said "lol" in the chat after this hand, very rare for me after a bad beat, I really dislike instigating chat when I lose pots.

Now this was tough, because while the raise sizing indicates I have very little fold equity here compared to usual, this guy just bluffs way too often.

I think he has a straight almost never here.

This is what it is, OK vs most people, but no smile on your face when you get it in, but easily fine vs this guy.

I got my rematch request granted.

I had this match going on at the same time as my first one vs Rigboz though, and through part of the 2nd I believe.

And QQ gets killed. What I said in game on the turn was what I was thinking on the flop. Very weird, especially considering his play in previous hands (like the KK one). If he raises to like 200 I probably would have folded, I know sounds weird. That's what I was thinking at the time, and I think it's too late to rethink that right now.

I'm not sure why the flop raise was sizes at 250, I forgot my thinking at the time, if any.

I probably miss a thin value bet on the river here but I wanted to get it in on the flop, surprised he didn't looking at his hand here.

Too sick, good way to end the night. Station4life.

----------------

I guess I put a little more detail into these than I was planning on, so hopefully some of you read it and maybe even one or two of you actually learn something (other than me making some bad plays and being a station).

Hopefully I can focus a little more and hit a nice heater.

In hindsight I seemed to actually run good today, but it's super late, I'm kind of delirious and still upset about that fucking turn shove with Ah7h or whatever above. So I'm not so optimistic.

Anyways, I'll update the links and stuff next time I update.
