Rough day

They transferred my gf to the hospital she had her transplant at. Still don't know what's going on, they think maybe some kind of flu or sinus infection or something. Her kidneys are working fine though, so hopefully it's not that.

My mom got her test results back, and she has a form of MS. Not the worst kind (my aunt had that) so hopefully she's ok. She's going into the hospital tomorrow for 3 days.

A little over 9k vpps to go for supernova, obviously the most important thing going on now (har har).

Ugh

Girlfriend's fever got up to 103 on Christmas evening. Had to bring her to the hospital, she has some kind of infection. They're going to transfer her to another hospital tomorrow to try to figure out what's going on. Her kidneys are ok as far as we've been told so far, so that looks good. She's had a nasty little cold for a few days so hopefully it's just a bug she's having trouble fighting off.

Mom gets her test results back tomorrow. I've been driving her in and out of the hospital for testing for the last week or so, the right side of her body has been numb and she can't work/drive/move faster than a turtle.

So yea, that and supernova, life is fun. Luckily I "have a little help from my friend." Still need like 10k vpps in 4 days, hoho.

Christmas Grind

Really dug myself into a hole here with supernova, but considering I didn't reach 50k vpps until late October and didn't play in November, it shouldn't have been easy ;).

I still plan on getting it, but my mom has been in and out of the hospital getting tests done and I've had to drive her for this stuff the last few days.

Between that and christmas shopping, I've hardly had a chance to play.

Our 4th stout and first all grain beer turned out worse than we expected. The ABV is only like 3%, our grain bill was pretty off. It's still carbonating, but I think I'm going to throw this batch out. If my brother (16) drank like I did when I was his age, I'd just give it to him and his friends, but it's probably a good thing that he doesn't.

So we made a new stout last night, it should hit over 6% abv and it should be pretty hoppy. If anybody drinks Dogfish Head beers out there, we used a similar hop process as they do for a lot of their beers. It's called continuous hopping. Stouts aren't known for their hoppy character, but I personally have enjoyed the few hoppy stouts that I've had. I'm really looking forward to this beer.

Finishing up the beer front, our IPA (similar to Dogfish Head 60 minute) is almost ready to keg. It should be ready for christmas eve and I'll probably bring some over to the party on my dad's side. I was hoping the stout would turn out for that, as most of my family drinks darker beers.

Our "special" barleywine is still second fermenting. Will probably bottle this one in a week or so and age it until early February before we try it. This one might actually finish over 10% abv, the IPA should be around 7-8%.

Back to poker, I plan on playing as much as I can tonight and tomorrow after I drive my mom to the doctor's. The night of the 26th I'll probably make a decision as to whether or not it is possible for me to get supernova or not. Regardless, I need to get the games in (xmas is expensive) so I'll be playing hard until then.

My girlfriend's birthday is the 23rd, so it's made my holiday a little busier than I should expect. More on her gifts in a few days.

Oh, and after my post the other day reviewing all of those games, I finished the day up about 25 bucks over 17 games, so I went something like 6-2 on the day. I was pretty drained from playing 17 games and reviewing and posting and talking about 9 of them, but I felt it's something I'll be making a habit of in the near future.

I think playing 15-20 550s a day and reviewing every HH would be a nice, profitable and satisfying "job" in the near future. I bought a few books to educate me on some other business ventures I plan on getting involved with in the next few years. More on that in the upcoming weeks/months.

A day in the life of the 110s

I've had a semi-bad start to the day. I'm reviewing my HHs so far to see how good/bad I've played. I'll highlight most of the major hands, and offer some strategical thoughts where they apply.

First up is Woltas. I saw him register at one or two 110s, so I figure he's done regging.

I sit, he sits. I sit again, he sits. So I'm two tabling a 6%+ winner with an average stake of 300+.

Still, he's never seemed very good to me, I have no idea how his ROI is that high. My notes on him are "calls 3-bets light, over 3-bets light." I've played him a little bit in the past. I haven't ran well vs him, but I recall a 4x+ 3-bet first level with A4o from him. This is the kind of stuff I can expect.

First major hand besides me 3-betting JJ and flopping trips, he folds to my turn bet. This hand is standard, but seems to be a sign of things to come.

Quality stuff, but overall just a little bit of a downer game.

Lets take a look at how the other table vs woltas is doing.

Standard match, only one pot over 400. I lose 33 to ATs with 1400 stacks in 50-100.

Overall not a bad start in terms of play. I've been a little card dead and lost some flips.

Moving on..

First hand vs a pretty horrible player. I played this like an idiot. Once I call the turn I call the river. I did that right, but then I second guessed myself and convinced myself I was calling the turn out of frustration/spew. Silly me.

Oh well, I would come back to see more life in this match.

Here's the next major hand. I had pulled a little "go and go" vs him earlier with KQ and he folded. This hand here is pretty standard. I opted to raise to 90 for two reasons. 1) He hadn't limped hardly ever in this match, he was fairly crazy/bluffy and had balls so I wouldn't be surprised to see a LRR shove here, which I could not call profitably. 2) Stacks were small and he is pretty aggro. He's going to bluff big when he bluffs and I'd rather not commit myself to pots I don't have to. 90 was best here imo.

I'm more worried about a check behind (which I play for pot control and check call his river bluff/straight) than a bet really. He should stack off with a K or Q, maybe a T and perhaps some sort of T9 94 type combo draw (yea 94 is definitely in his range, especially suited). Plus I get the fold equity from his bluff here. I doubt he's firing 2 and a lot of rivers scare the crap out of me.

The next hand I'm not sure about. I probably should be firing 2 here. At the same time he's bluffing a ton of rivers so it might be more profitable to play a smaller, higher equity pot. I opted for the latter option and it paid off. After this hand I figured him for an idiot. He must watch too many of those "call to take it away later" poker shows on tv. Lol.

After that my next big hand is K4s which I call his PF shove and run into AK. He holds. 0-3, but nothing atrocious yet. I'm doing ok, not tilting or anything. Lets see how the game I was playing on the other table went.

Good start. I raise the river so big because most of his calling range is Ax and he should call this raise with Ax. He can probably get away from an 8 or a 6 (though I would expect some players to call with that) because the backdoor hit the river and the J might scare him a bit. Keep in mind this is not a good player.

Here's an example of him being a "not good" player.

By this time the other match was over. I was 0-3, not feeling too happy about this match, already taking a break after this game finished, I did not open up another game.

I'm not sure how I feel about the following hand. I wouldn't say I was tilting, but I wasn't in a good mood either and was stopping my session for a 15-20 minute break.

The minraise thing he'd been doing about half the time I limped (which wasn't a lot) in the last dozen or so buttons. That, combined with him stabbing out pretty aggressively made me feel like I had a lot of fold equity here. And I do still have some outs if I'm behind. Not many though, and this is probably not a profitable play. I'm not sure, it's hard to tell because of the holding I saw here. But I went with my read and made a move, if only I had done the same in that AK hand.

So I'm 1-3, and I need a break. I come back 30 minutes later, feeling refreshed and ready to go.

Obviously woltas sits with me right away. Redemption, perhaps? I think I've lost my last 3 against him, and while I feel I have a clear edge in the match, I have a bigger edge against other players. I just feel I know where he is strong and where he is weak.

Here I think I miss a river bet. If I did miss it, it is super thin, but I think I can get some value here out of Woltas. He doesn't have a Q or T ever here and I can respect a raise from him, he's not laggy or spewy/bluffy, but he will look me up with a 7 imo.

Normally I play as nitty OOP as woltas does against me. This means I'm 3-betting more than I am calling, and I'm not calling very often here. He's calling 3-bets pretty light so most of my strong hands and every PP is being 3-bet for value.

So when I call T9o OOP, I need to make these kinds of river value bets if I want to be profitable with this PF call. I fail to do so.

I don't think he's ever said a word to me. I've displayed my lack of enthusiasm about playing him in our first few matches (a few months ago), I've also made some friendly comments here or there, but he's never said a word in the chat. Oh well, I'll be fine playing him when he sits with me.

Lets see how I'm doing on the other table (if you notice throughout this, I'm 2 tabling these 110 turbos at all times).

This hand is tough. At the time I didn't have the reads to get away from this, but I feel I should almost be thinking the opposite, I should have a read to call here. He wasn't just donking OOP every raised flop or anything. Tough hand, could be avoided if I had folded the flop. This is the kind of trouble I can get into when I take a marginal read and put myself in a very tough spot. I've really cut back on it over the last 500 or so games, and I definitely see a big improvement in my game, but I have to continue to do this.

Don't get me wrong, I'm flatting or raising this donk bet against a lot of players, but I didn't have a specific read here.

Not much else happens in this game. He's overbet raised a few of my limps. I limp 44, he checks J7. Flops a 7, I lose a flop bet, nothing major. Been running into a lot of those lately (where they do something a few times, I get a hand to exploit it and they fail to continue the pattern), just variance.

Overall, as most of my games so far have gone, this game had very few "medium" pots, and one big hand pretty much made the difference when we were medium-deep stacked.

I'm 2-4 now, and playing 2 more.

First hand on my new game. This is an example of "wishful thinking." I can't believe I call here but don't call the AK hand earlier. As you can see, I've mentioned this a few times and it obviously bothers me and I won't go against my reads/feelings mid hand in the near future :)

I think the river bet is fine, but there's no way he's minraising a 5 or 6 here on the first hand. Silly to not fold the river.

The next hand I make some money back, he calls a 3x raise with 85o, so now I know what I'm up against after he proceeds to chase a gutshot and miss.

Some reenforcement of hand one being a clear river fold.

I'm normally not as comfortable as I was in the past just blindly leading bottom pair on wet flops in limped pots, I generally mix up my play in these areas. This guy was clearly calling super super light, so I think any piece of a flop should be bet for value, including A high.

The turn is very nice, and he's been getting more aggressive. This was not a solid "he's going to bet" read or anything, but I felt if he bets here normally at all, at this point in the match he's leading out with a wider range. Luckily he did, unfortunately he didn't look me up light, but I'll take the extra 250 chips from his K high draw.

I miss a flop lead and a river value bet in between this hand. I wasn't as clear with my reads during the game as I am reviewing this, and I definitely need to focus a little better in some of these games.

Then this hand hits, and it's obviously just a standard beat.

This is a fairly ridiculous hand. I don't think he does this with a combo draw to be honest. I figured, overpair or straight/straight draw, overcards most of the time. I don't really know, he's done some strange stuff during the course of the match, showing some marginal looking aggression at times.

Yea, 12bbs, but I'm ahead of his calling range + FE = profit.

Onto the other table.

Shahin86 sits with me. He's a marginal winner but I'd much rather play somebody like woltas. Shahin86 is a very laggy player and I think he spews in a lot of spots, but makes up for some if not all of that by putting me in some tough spots where I (presumably) make poor decisions. I felt I played the match fine (prior to reviewing this). I made a remark about how he should be playing Camel when he sat with me (he refused to not sit with Camel and Camel apparently took offense to this a few months ago).

About 6 hands in. This is an example of "spewy" Shahin. While I haven't played him before, I know somewhat how he plays and have no problem playing this so aggressively. It should help in future hands/games as well.

One thing I notice already in this game. Twice in raised pots in position I cbet him on semi dry boards. Twice he floated with Ax and I failed to fire 2 or bluff a river. He's not tricky enough to where I shouldn't be able to recognize and fire multiple times in these spots.

Here's a semi-strange hand. I can't see a ton of value in the river here, I doubt he's hero calling K high for much value, maybe a PP or 3? I'm not sure if he's bluff raising me with anything here either, but I can see him check raising the river for value.

This hand just sucks. I should have bet more on the turn, but I have to call this river. An interesting note is the 490. I've picked up on some players in the past betting a little less than the "100,200,300" marks when they want a call and a little more when they're bluffing.

Not to say this is what is going on here, just a related note.

After this I win a flip to take a big lead but then his 33 holds against my A2.

Not much is going on besides these hands. He's calling me light OOP when I raise, I'm picking up a lot of pots uncontested, he's made a few floats and big river bets, etc.

Last hand.

In hindsight, maybe I should raise a little more here preflop or shove. He's going to call my shove with a weaker range. He's just calling so often OOP and is being so laggy I think I get value out of 99 here. Regardless, I can see arguments for shoving, LRR and raising here against Shahin. Other than that, I think the hand played itself (I should have bet 250ish here because I was calling a shove).

Ok, well 3-5 going into my final match of the "early" part of my session today.

This match was pretty boring overall. He was limping hands like AKo early on and I lost a few pots on thin calls. I fought back a bit, lost some, etc. and this was the final hand.

3-6 day so far.

Reviewing all of my hands so far today was definitely cumbersome/time consuming but I felt I was playing too poorly to put it off any longer.

I need to mainly focus a little more in these matches so I can exploit the reads I pick up more often. I obviously didn't run well in these big pots today so far, but I've also spewed enough to cause myself at least one buyin today.

I didn't want to spend so much time and energy reviewing hands because I'm really trying for Supernova and way way behind right now, but I just really needed it.

Hope you enjoy the hands and comments, I'll do another one towards the end of this month or in early January (unless I go robusto and hit Nova early).

-------------

The first hand made sense at the time. I thought given the flow of the game and his hand ranges that the 3-bet was solid and he was not calling/4-bet shoving small aces or crap. He must have had a feeling I was weak/bluffing because villain is a fairly decent winner. I just love when other winning players sit with me. I played quite a few yesterday. I ran into this bizarre guy that was one of the biggest winners in the 110s I'd seen statistically, but he was flatting my raises OOP with stuff like 85o and 26o. He turned trip 2s with 72s OOP vs my top pair and that finished that game.

I'm working on a "tilt control" article. I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow sometime, it's over halfway done. I'll post it on here when I am finished.

My buddy almost has the "basic" site halfway done. We'll be transferring my blog over to husng.com when this happens. Probably will have Hokie and BCM blogging there, and maybe a few others.

I'm going to start to write some more articles, but my main goal right now is to make money and get supernova. The month started out well, I was 2-3 tabling the 100 regular speeds on PS, made 1500+ in a very short amount of time, but had to start playing turbos because of 'nova. I've had a little 5 buyin downswing since doing that, but hopefully I can bounce back. I think supernova will make me at least 3k in extra money next year, so I really think it's worth going for. I need another 16-17k vpps this month to hit it.

Update

Hokie has started updating his blog again, check it out when you have a chance.

I also traded links with Andrew, who runs PSmoney.com among other websites/business ventures. He just started his blog and is a pretty cool guy, so check out his blog if you get a chance.

I'll update more tomorrow probably.

Also, a friend of mine is going to be putting up the basic parts for the website (husng.com). I'll be transferring my blog there and hopefully he'll also put up some of the cool poker tools that Poker Curious (from 2+2) designed. These are all free, btw.

Probably won't have the video and other loaded content sections up for at least another month. I want to finance this thing 100% on my own, for the most part, and I don't have the money to invest in a fully functional site at the moment. If you know anybody who wants to invest in the site, have them ship me an email (ryan.ryryp13@gmail.com) or post here. But to be clear, I'm looking for a decent investment (not like 500 bucks) rather than a bunch of small investors or small deals. Otherwise, I'll be going ahead with my plan to open the site in stages.

I found some great website guys (finally) that I plan on using down the line when I have some more money to put into the more complicated parts of the site. Their name is ClearlyMosaic (http://www.clearlymosaic.com/) and Collin Moshman (author of the 2+2 SNG/STT book) recommended them to me.

Speaking of Collin, he is working on a husng book. It should be out sometime in the late spring (I think) and I will and you should be looking forward to it.

More on that, the website and some goals/plans in future updates.
