The "Meh" Side of Variance

Feeling really good today, been kind of in a rut lately and feeling a little down on my game. I fixed a few things I felt were bothering my overall play (outside of stress) and I think I played great tonight.

Unfortunately I hit some variance and ended up down about 170ish for the night.

I also played a guy yesterday 4x in a row. I went 3-1 and felt like I was really tuning into his game and habits even though he went in and out of tilting and playing really weak-tight to really aggro.

Today I went 1-2 against him and ran like shit in those games. Lost AA to TT preflop all in, and hit a few of his stronger cards in bigger blind-fold equity situations. Oh well.

Anyways, I should send this guy some money or something because I've felt a lot better since playing him, something just clicked and I've been playing a lot better ever since. Just need to avoid losing 200 bucks a night.

I have a few things having to do with HUSNG on the horizon. I'll elaborate on those in the future as they do or don't happen.

I lost to Aaron Been 2-1 in our HUL a few nights ago too. I played so bad in my first game, I really was just not focusing or thinking correctly. The second game I played a lot better and in the third one I just really ran bad. So I'm 1-3 in HUL and out of the playoffs already. Next season I'll do a lot better, I'm positive. Hopefully I can crush my last opponent and have a bit of redemption.

I'll probably host a HU MTT on stars early next week, if anybody is interested just comment here or go on 2+2 HU forum.

Bankroll $3,742.72

And I got GoldStar again, hopefully Platinum next month.

Frustration

Sorry, been awhile since I've updated.

Yesterday I had my biggest loss as of yet. -675 or so. Considering I went 2-4 at 100/110s and 0-2 in 200s, it's not really a huge variance loss, and I'll certainly hit a lot worse than that as time goes on. I didn't tilt at all though either, so that's a good thing. A couple of beats here and there, but mostly just ugly situations brought on by opponent's ranges versus my hands and a bunch of ugly turns and rivers. This stuff happens though.

Today I felt I was experiencing the same variance, though I went 5-1 in 100s and 110s. When I hit a heater I should really be doing good. I'm about 66% in the 110s so far, but have only played a little more than 50. Obviously not a big enough sample size.

The main thing that is frustrating me, at least tonight, is Heads Up League. I lost 2-0 again to another player I should have beaten. Don't get me wrong, these guys aren't like horrible or anything, they are other 2+2ers, but they play a lower buyin than me and I should be more advanced and enjoy some sort of an edge over them. I've made some bad plays, been put in some tough spots and hit a bad part of variance in these. That's what I attribute it to. I can tell when I am outplayed. I am rarely wrong in judging that part. I can tell when variance is bad, I am rarely wrong in that as well mostly because statistically I have built up confidence in knowing what is variance and what is tilt. That and game experience.

So anyways, I am 0-2 in the HUL, 0-4 in the individual games, meaning I have to win my next 3 best of 3 matches, one of which will be played against Aaron Been who is in my bracket. If I manage to do that it will be on the good side of variance, as I am nowhere near a favorite to win 3 best of 3s in a row vs 2 players I might have a little edge over and Aaron Been who has an edge over me.

I'll post some hands over the next few days, regardless of how I run.

I can feel myself nearing a breaking out point where I'm making a lot of money. My goal for the last few months has been to reach 10k by the time I'm done working with my business this year, end of September basically. I plan to reach that goal still, but I feel I can surpass it, almost that I should.

The main things that are holding me back as of now, not that I'm struggling or anything, I've done very well in all sets of 100 for the last 500 or so games (basically since I moved out of the lower games) is playing too few games per day. In order to achieve a higher rate of games I will have to organize the things that keep me away from playing as well as increase my efficiency online. I also have another thing that will be helping me play more games in the upcoming week (hopefully), more on that another day.

That's all for now, I'll be trying to play a lot more in the next week (though it's gonna be a busy week) and post a lot more too.

** My buddy took like 400th out of 4k+ people in that 20k FR for me today while I was out, for a whopping 12 bucks. I didn't realize how bad this thing paid out, so from now on we only are going to do the sats for the Supernova 50k FR, and play in that. 800 people and top 130 or so pay out, so that's a FR worth playing.

Went 3-1 in 110/100s and 1-0 in a 200. Tough to play a lot, g/f has been sleeping the whole night about fifteen feet from me.

Also played a 180 man with Hokiegreg, OMG and Dboy, blogger's bash??? I lost in 5 hands to two suckouts, well 1.5 suckouts.

In other news, here's a little story last night to kind of show how insecure my girlfriend's dad is and so you guys kind of get a picture as to what I'm dealing with.

About 3 months ago he had started coughing in her old apartment. She owns two rabbits and had just gotten a second one about a week prior. One night we could tell he wanted to go out with some woman, as he always gets extra antsy. Well I went home, and my girlfriend didn't feel too well, so he started coughing uncontrollably. He said he had allergies and made her drive him to a hotel late at night. From then on he stayed in a hotel.

Recently my friend took that rabbit that he claimed he was allergic to over to his mom's house. She's going to watch the rabbit for an indefinite amount of time due to my girlfriend's kidney recovery. Her dad had told her prior to this that he really wasn't allergic to the rabbit, that he just hated it. He kept the lie going for weeks for no reason.

So last night he starts coughing uncontrollably, I had seen him on the phone, trashed as hell (he drinks 11am-bed) outside. He came in and was ridiculous, saying that the original rabbit is now causing him to cough and such. He said he'd call a cab for a hotel. I ended up taking him at about 930pm to a hotel. Usually when he stays at a hotel he'll stay at a budget one, not like motel-budget, but a normal hotel. He needed to go to the nice Holiday Inn last night for some odd reason. This was the case the other time as well, he needed a nice hotel.

The extra odd thing, at least to an outsider, is that he will say if he is going out with a woman or whatever usually. He has no reason to lie about shit. But that's just the way he is, he gets into a weird mood and starts lying for no reason and just keeps going.

Anyways, hopefully I hit up some more games tomorrow.

Stressing Lately

I think everything has been taking a toll on me. I've felt tilt come on after 3 games yesterday, so I quit. Then today after two of my HUL matches, which I lost, I was fairly upset again.

Nothing major, but this is the complete opposite of what I am in these matches.

I tried to attribute it to running bad (I've ran into quads in a stretch of 2 out of 3 games), but I've ran plenty worse (I'm actually even over the last two days I believe) in the last two months and actually been in a good mood after longer sessions.

I don't know what I need to do, I think my gf's father is a big part of this, he is staying with us for an undetermined amount of time. He's one of the most outrageous people I've ever met, and it's like babysitting two people (one is my girlfriend, but she's recovering so it's not a bad thing when i say babysit). I'm also trying to run my business and play some games, but the shit isn't working too well right now.

I don't really have a solution for this that is sane, ignoring him only goes so far, telling him off just builds tension and forces him to make decisions (which he is terrible at) plus my girlfriend doesn't need any of this stress right now.

Anyways, I forgot to make a post on here about it, but I started a NL Heads Up League (SNG) on the 2+2 forums. We have 24 players in it and tonight was the first night of matches. I broke people down into brackets of 6, and everyone has a little over a month to play their 5 other people in a best of 3 match. The buyin is 5 dollars as a default, but if two players agree they can raise it. I played mine for 30 tonight, at the request of a 20-30 dollar player (I believe). The first match I think he ran ridiculously good, the second match was pretty damn long (50-100 level in a regular speed game) and the swings of the match were pretty crazy. I dominated the first 10-15 minutes, but then I raised a draw on the turn with a card that he likely hit for top pair was there, so the fold equity against his range was a lot smaller than it should've been. Plus he didn't seem to want to fold in most spots, which turned out to be good with the kind of stuff I was getting tonight.

I stacked him on a hand after this, it went something like this:

I limped 99, ready to reraise him, he checked. Flop was Q92, no suits. He lead out, I called. Turn was another queen, making two diamonds on the board. He half potted, I raised 3x, he called. River is a non diamond 7. He checks and I shove for about 1.5x the pot. He takes a little time and calls with 8d7d.

I was pretty happy with that hand, but that's about the only good situation I caught him in correctly for a lot of chips. My bluffing % was a lot higher than normal because he is fairly spewy and I was not hitting much at all, so I tried to catch him in bad spots with weaker cards than usual, and I just kept hitting the top part of his range.

My buddy Automatic/TheOpenDoor lost his HU match to a guy I beat once in a 33 from the forum. I didn't really see the match but I remember a fairly rough hand for my buddy.

Back to the league, after the 4-5 weeks of the "regular season," anybody with a winning record will participate in the playoffs. These will be best of 3 for the first round, and best of 5 every round thereafter. I will also be hosting private HU tourneys during this whole thing, so if there is any interest in these post on 2+2 or here, anybody is welcome to play as these are just for the fun of playing (and the little bit of money these buyins will be for).

Anyways, enough ranting, hopefully I'm in a much better mood tomorrow and can grind out some games.

Also, I'm done with the degen challenge, at least for now. I was at like 900 and just decided I would rather grind 110s vs fish and play a worse range of fish in the 220s for now. This may be coinciding with my stress lately, as I would've thought the idea of stopping this challenge was crazy last week. I guess that's the difference on my mental state/happiness.

Playing.. a little

So I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I kind of just want to play fish in the 110s and 220s. Maybe I'll take a shot at the 550s but I'd rather not do it along the lines of the challenge and wait until I have 10k to play any 550s. I could probably start mixing them in sooner versus big fish when I am playing very well. We shall see.

Here's a pretty hand, second match I've played in the last like 6 days (not including 6s when I was trashed).

Couple of things:

Apparently I went 5-10 last night at those 6s, not that it matters at all.

I read over the hands again, I'm going to leave them up because I think some of them are funny.

And another thing about playing while drunk, normally I can play perfectly fine when drunk and I have actually made a lot of money playing drunk (in relation to winrate, not actual "OMG I made 200 bucks drunk over 25 days"). Last night I understood I was trashed beyond my normal level of trashed, so I was smart and fucked around at the 6s. I think I actually ran pretty bad as well, but I was definitely messing around and having a good time.

Back to real poker, I'm going to try to get back in the swing of things today by playing a 2+2er. After a game or two I'm going to probably try to get up a buyin in the 110s before playing more 220s, only because I haven't played much in the last 3-4 days.

I'll update after some games.

I think I'm only down 2-3 buyins at these, not bad.

Anywys, I'm raising every single button FYI, and I do not stand by any of the lines I have taken in these games, so don't comment about them being wrong, lol.

This guy was just a nut, I made a nice hero call or two on him tha I didn't copy paste, but here's the final hadn in which i look like a donk obv

i lost the next one but there were no goodhands to post... boring match...

and I lost my last one to a guy that folded to 90% of my PF raises. Starting to sober up so this is getting boring, will make a post tomorrow, should have time to play a few regular level games.

BR somewhere around 3750, so degen is 750ish, I'll figure otu what I lost tonight, could've of bee nmore than twenty bucks.

Enjoy.

Good News

She came out of surgery, everything went perfect so far. It'll be at least 24 hrs until we know for sure how well the body accepts the kidney, but all indications are like 100% so far.

Going to drink since I can't see her for awhile, if at all tonight.

Hospital

At Loyola Medical Center in Chicago burbs, waiting on word about my girlfriend. She's in surgery right now, it kind of hit me hard this morning when she was being taken away, I wasn't like a wreck or anything but my body just felt like shit for a few hours. Her sister who is donating the kidney came out fine and is recovering in a normal room now, so the first part went well. Obviously the second part is the much riskier part, if the kidney will take, as well as a million other bad things that have small chances of happening. If it was a straight money bet it would be the surest thing in the world, but it's a life so it's actually a scary thing.

Anyways, I truly think everything will be ok, but there's always those thoughts in the back of your mind. I should know how it went within the next 2-3 hours.

I won a couple 110s 2-3 days ago, so the degen br is at like 7 something. Haven't played since then, was contemplating playing some 5 dollar PLO HUSNGs to get my mind off of this, but forum browsing and the occasional IM convo has kept me about as normal as I could feel now.

End of Day

So after repeatedly losing fish to people regging faster than I, I finally found a fish at like 230am.

I felt I played about as good as I could, ran into some beats and lost. I'd be just a hair below 1k if I had won this one.

Here's some hands, fwiw I feel very good about this challenge and my prospects if I keep playing the way I am.

Second match was a lot longer. I may have called down a bit too much but I felt I really knew when I was ahead and the rivers really priced me into calling against my assumed range. A few rivers really sucked. Since I don't post hands a lot I'll show some of the good and bad ones.

The second to last one was tough, the last one was semi-close against his pushing range but a standard call.

Anyways, I'm breakeven in the 220s so far, going to take a little break and try to find another fish. Obviously I'm going to need to run fairly well no matter if I'm on my A game or not. Even at the 33s in which I consider myself a very good player, I lost a few in a row more than once. That was ridiculously bad variance but the fish at the 110-220s are probably a little better than my sitting with anybody at the 33s. Not by much though, some people would be very surprised, then again if you sharkscope somebody and see they've lost 5k+ aka 25-50+ buyins at 110s/220s I guess it's not a shocker to think they belong in a lower level game.

Bankroll $3,599.63

Degen BR $612.63

Now that I look at it, I could afford to play another 110. I'm kind of in the "in between" level of whether to play a 220 or play a 110. Personally, I feel I've played pretty close to my best in all of the 110s and 220s I've played so far. I definitely feel a little more of a "race" in the body I guess in the 220s, and I am extremely comfortable in the 110s.

So maybe I'll play another 110, this is kind of a decision I've put off, what to do in the "in between" buyins where You're very near 3 buyins. We shall see.

220s in the near future

Doing well.

Won another after my post last night.

I lost my first one today, very first hand, dude open shoves I call with TT, he flips AK and hits a K on the turn. If I do the math against a fishy player that is going to open shove on the first hand of a 110 I feel a good range is 66-JJ, sometimes QQ (but just as often a pair like 66 or worse) and almost never KK or AA. Add to that AK plus maybe AQ or even worse and I'm well ahead and will call everytime.

I've won my second two after that one, here's a nice hand vs a guy that also open shoved on the first hand and open shoved a few hands later:

Guess he put me on ace high...

I lost my first game today to one of the bigger fish I've played at the 55s. I had just taken a beat in which he called 2 barrels with ace high no draws, and was down to 900 in the 50-100 blind. He limped, I raised to 600, and he called with T5o. Flop came KJT. I shoved for 300 he took some time and made the call. Turn 8, river 2.

I'm at 227 or so in this challenge, so +117. Pretty shitty considering the length of time I've put into this, but I also have not played really at all in the last 5-6 days. Hopefully this week I'll make a nice run and be in the 550s or something before reaching some sort of limit and downswing-challenge done type end to this. I won't run it broke like a real degen, I want to get some actual monetary reward for taking the time to do this challenge. More on that sometime when I'm actually making money with this challenge.

Bankroll $3,314.63

Edit:

After going 0-2 in the 55s I've won 3 in a row followed by my first win at the 110s.

So Degen BR is now 433ish. Will be playing another few after Sopranos hopefully.

Bankroll $3,419.63 (transferred 100 to the guy that inspired this challenge, he stopped over with 100 bucks cash for the transfer, driving a total of 90 minutes. He is a true degenerate).

Short Update

Keep running bad in these 110s, at 232 now for the challenge. 0-2 at 110s. Stressful day today with the move into my new place, tomorrow will be just as bad most likely, don't know if I'll get to play.

Girlfriend's degenerate father won 10k on a lottery ticket (he spends a few hundred a day on them though) and is giving her a third of the win. Not sure what the tax is for that but I'd imagine at least 25%, so she's looking at 2500 tops, maybe closer to 2k, either way pretty cool for her.

Hopefully some more action-packed updates soon with hands and such, I've been semi-lagging on posting hands here for awhile, sorry.

Degen Challenge Update 3

I've finally started to see some light in this.

Up to 290 from the 100 in this thing. Went on a good run the last two days, winning my last 4-5 33s, then 3 55s and then I lost a 110 against a pretty big fish, more on that in a sec. I just won my last two 55s, one of which I got a little lucky on when I made a bad move.

As for the 110, I got the perfect fish for me to play in my first match at this level. I don't think I would have a bigger advantage against many other players than this one, unfortunately he floated me with one over card in raised pots within 3-4 hands of each other and hit to even the match. Even at this I was pretty ok with because I lost the minimum on the hands. Then he flopped two pair to my top pair queen kicker and we got it in. I felt the play was fine because I was definitely ahead of his range and felt my read on his range was very solid. Overall, disappointing results but I was very happy with my play at this game.

In other news, Crounder is somewhere around 1400 in this challenge. He's on a nice little heater it appears and should be on 550s soon. One thing about his run is he has stayed playing 110s when he should be playing 220s. Hopefully he wins a few 550s in a row because moving down to a level you've never played may cause confidence problems if you run bad at that level. That is why I did not advocate skipping levels in this degen challenge, but rather moving up and down according to a ridiculous bankroll guideline. There are few rules in this thing but I kept them at a minimum so the rules that I have for them I feel are very important. Regardless, best of luck to him and may I see him at the 5500s rather soon.

I'm also starting to move into my new place tomorrow so I probably won't have time for more than 3-5 matches. It's also my buddy's 21st birthday so I'll be busy in the night.

Bankroll $3,382.38 (Note: Bankroll reflects my buddy winning 86 bucks last night in cash on my account in which we split, other than that I have only played games within this challenge since the start)

Degen Challenge Update 2

I've been running like crazy horrible during this thing. The original 100 bucks is at 120 bucks or so right now, so another 33 win and I'm at the 55s again.

So far I'm 1-2 in the 55s and something like 17-12 in 33s. Had some really tough beats, handled it well through the first like 20-25 games but I think the last 5-10 games I have been playing fairly subpar. The last 3 games I have won and I feel I've started to get back to my A game.

On the other hand, Crounder33 has enjoyed a good bit of success in this degen challenge so far. While I don't have the specific numbers for him, he just won another 110 and I believe that puts him at close to 650 dollars total in this challenge. That's a profit of 550 and he'll be on 220s next. Good luck to him and hopefully I join him soon enough.

I also missed the VIP freerolls today which is kind of upsetting.

Degen Challenge Update

Been running like shit in these 33s. I went 5-3 last night to take me up to 8-7, up for the first time in this thing.

These are the final 2 hands of the first two matches I've played today. Hand 1 is kind of "meh," I should've raised a little more probably. Hand 2 is just gross.

Anyways, 8-9 now, feels like I've moved down and will never move back up. In hindsight it would've been nicer to start with 200 and just play the 55s I had been playing.
