SilverStar

Got SilverStar about 2 hours ago. Went 12-6 today at the 33s. Another few buyins and I'll start mixing in a few 55s using game selection. Probably taking the rest of the night off from 33s. Might play a few private games with a buddy, if so I will post anything interesting that comes up.

I went over my PT stats with two other players tonight, but only briefly. It seems I am doing very well in the BB, but I may need to work on getting my VPIP down a bit in the sb. The sample we were talking about is only like 5500 hands though, I think. something like 130 matches maybe. Perhaps more on this in another post.

VPP Update and more...

So I need 145 more VPPs, meaning 18 games or so tomorrow at 33s. I played 16 33s today and went 11-5.

So far I've ran pretty well at 33s, going 21-9. A 70% winrate at these is almost certainly not sustainable for me, so I should expect some variance to kick in sometime. If I am a 60% winner or higher at this level though, I should not experience too bad of variance.

I think that's all for now, I imported my last 45 matches into PT. I did well at the 22s as well, I went 45-26 over my 71 games at that level for a 63% winrate. I didn't feel I ran insanely well there, so maybe just a little above average and I am something like a 61% winner at 22s and a 60% winner at 33s. That would be nice.

My plan is to get silver star tomorrow, if I run insanely well early, like win my first 5 of 6 or something, I may game select a few 55s and play that by ear. My overall plan is to keep playing 33s until I've played at least 100. If my bankroll is at least 30 buyins for 55s by then I will probably start taking controlled shots at 55s, game selecting, etc.

I've noticed at the 33s if I sit first, I play very profitable people often. This annoys me because tonight I played games that last on an average of something like 20 minutes. Because I've been playing fairly TAG at the 22s and 33s, if I do not get into a good situation with the cards early or my opponent does not have a hand in his calling/raising range, these things last awhile. I am not giving them an inch for the most part, making a lot less mediocre/high variance calls that are tough to determine where you are at. A lot of players at these levels are also checking down and overbetting rivers. I think this is strength a lot of times and have done a great job avoiding it. I feel I am really not allowing my opponents too much profit with their strong hands.

Anyways, silverstar tomorrow, 50% extra vpps and some OK freerolls/sats!

Also, I am thinking of making it a goal to get Goldstar in the month of June. If I feel I have some kind of shot in May I will go for it, but I'll wait to see how I am running at these higher limits over a larger sample size before I know for sure if this is possible in May.

VPPs

So I need 273 more VPPs to reach SilverStar status by the end of this month, AKA by Monday night.

The 33 dollar turbos give me 8 VPPs per game played, so I need 34 more. I probably won't be able to play anymore today, I have to go eat with my girlfriend and her father then go watch my friend's band play. After that I will probably hang out with them at their afterparty, so I won't be back until I am way too tired and/or drunk to play. If I can get 2-3 more games in though, it would be great.

Other than that, I have tomorrow wide open to play, except for the Bulls sweep of the Heat at noon. If I can play 25 games tomorrow I'll be in great shape for Monday and easily obtain my goal.

And so far at the 33s I'm 10-4. So hopefully I can continue to at least be a little above breakeven over the next two days, and after that be robusto.

Good day

So far I've had a very good day. I've gone 6-2 in in 22s. Then I decided to play a 33 dollar. I'm 4-1 in those now. I'm sorta using game selection in the 33s and avoiding the higher ROI/Profit players for now, until I have 40-50 buyins at this level. I've experienced a lot of crazies today as well, luckily I've been patient and have come out on top. I've had a lot of luck inducing bluffs or feigning weakness today, hopefully it is not all variance.

Some Changes

So last night in between sober and drunk poker (about a 5 hour middle time) I thought about playing a little tighter at the 22s. It seemed that these players will get it in way too wide regardless of my playing style/image. So far so good. I was 4-0 last night and have won my last 9 games today to make it 9-2 today. I'm playing a lot tighter overall but very aggressive in big pots. I am also making call downs with hands I would normally build pots with, it adds protection against these idiots and allows them to keep bluffing into me. Some examples of horrid play I've come into contact with are below. These hands are truly gross from villain's perspective. The first hand is the second hand of the match, nice PF call.

I can't believe I folded this, I thought I had a click tell on him that he had hit, and I felt this is more likely a slow played 9 or a hit 8 on turn than a 2. He flipped Q2 to show after I took awhile to fold. I knew he was spewing a lot of flops at these high blinds, and that he gave me very little credit when I checked hands. I actually meant to fire at this flop too. Against most players this would be an insta call regardless of click tells because of the flush draw on the board I think. This guy didn't care about draws as shown below:

(Note, during the time of the following hand he had been playing extremely passively with hit hands and had been minraising a ton, while I normally fold this type of hand PF in this situation, I feel this was an OK call considering the circumstances)

Also, I will not post too many strategy-based hands on this blog, I use the 2+2 Heads Up forum for this. It is definitely the best place to learn about any form of poker and I've met quite a few good people from that forum already.

During this post I played another match against the only person that I now have played 3x (not counting people I know). I was 0-2 vs this guy and have run horribly vs him. He's the only person out of the people I've played 2x that I've lost both games too, besides a 2+2er. He won again, kinda coolered me on a dark tunnel bluff turned top pair, pretty gross stuff. I have 8 more games to play when I return tonight.

Ugly stuff. Unfortunately I'm stuck drinking with a buddy tonight. Usually we drink every 10 days, but I drank with him Monday, and I needed a ride (more on that later) to pick my girlfriend up from dialysis (maybe more on that too) so I kind of got suckered in. Also, my friends are playing a show Saturday night, so I will be drinking then too. It's almost as if I'm back in high school. The point of this is that I will have to reach 20 matches today and about half will be when I am drunk. Judging by the types of hands I've been playing this may end up being a very interesting night. Last time I played drunk I ended up about 100.

I find I've been having to give up a lot of hands on the river, which I hate to do. It really sucks to be in a decent position on the flop or turn, but not strong enough to raise, and then get bet out on the river to a horrible card. Hopefully it's just variance and I'm not playing badly.

22 dollar turbos

So today is the 3-4th day I've played 22 dollar turbo HU SNGs. The first two days I ran pretty well, my cards were a little above average and I connected to boards at a regular rate. I was up about 10 buyins over 25 games, which translates into running very hot (The timing of the cards I was getting was very well and I was playing at the top of my game).

Yesterday I dropped about 85 bucks, which isn't really a ton considering that is 4 buyins. Today I am 2-2. I've found that there are a lot more players at this level that will bluff random boards and bet at anything. It is very hard to read their betting patterns and also very hard to put them on a range of hands that is narrow enough to determine within a margin of error the correct decisions for each play. At the same time, when I get a hand I'm so very often ahead and it is not very hard to build pots to get value out of my hands.

I plan to play a little tighter and more aggressively against these sort of players today, I also want to get at least another 16 games in by the end of the day. I think I'm running into more than an average amount of these type of players in the last two days, but there are definitely more at this level than at any other previous level I have played. If I keep my head and play a solid, tight-aggressive ABC poker game, I should do very well at this level over a good sample of games (200-300). It also helps that I have very good tilt control and the rare times that I do start to tilt I realize it and I stop playing.

Also, to conclude this post, I have a goal I've set for the end of this month. I am trying to achieve SilverStar on Pokerstars, which is a VIP level that gives you a few little benefits/bonuses.

I need to play about 110 more 22 dollar turbos by the end of April 30th to achieve this, so about 20 matches a day. If I can get 20 total in today I will be satisfied and keep doing this every day until May. I'd like to get a nice 40-50 game day though, but probably only if I am running well.

Background

The purpose of this blog is chronicle my poker play. I don't have a specific plan as to how I will do this, if I get something outlined I will post it.

A little background about how I came into playing online poker.

I started playing online poker seriously in mid January of 2007. A friend of mine had transferred me 200 dollars on PokerStars (from now on referred to as PS) sometime in late summer or early fall of 2006.

At this time I had only played 5-10 dollar 9 mans SNGs on Pokerstars from sometime in 2004-2005 until now, very casually as an entertainment type thing. I had never thought of really making money playing online or attempting to do it part-time, etc.

Over the next 5 months or so I was down about 50 dollars in a few hundred single table Sit and Goes (from now on referred to as STTs).

In mid January, at the advice of my friend, I decided I'd give playing poker online a semi-serious shot. I don't remember how it happened, but I decided to play 5 dollar Heads Up SNGs. Within a week or two I was down to 75 dollars. Over the course of playing, up until now, I have slowly climbed up and built my bankroll up. I went from 5 dollar regular speed SNGs, to 10 dollar ones, then to 11 dollar turbos, then back to 10 dollar regulars. I played a lot of 4 man HU SNGs as well during this time, and I have about 900 total HU games under my belt now. I am playing 22 dollar turbo HU SNGs at the present time, and have also played 20 dollar regular speed HU SNGs. I only play HU, I have played very little of anything else and do not plan to change this in the near future.

At the present time I've only played about 40 22 dollar HUSNGs, my bankroll at the current time is $731.78. I will list my bankroll at the bottom of each post.

That is about it right now for background into poker, I'll provide a more extensive background of my experiences playing live poker in my lifetime, and perhaps even a personal background if this blog is ever popular enough or it gets requested enough.
